Walter Hermann Hitzig (born May 9, 1922 in Mexico City ; † October 9, 2012 ; resident in Zurich and Burgdorf ) was a Swiss pediatrician and transplant specialist .

Life

Hitzig spent the first three years of school at the German secondary school in Mexico because his father Theodor Hitzig worked as a doctor in Mexico City. He studied medicine at the University of Zurich and graduated in 1947 with the state examination. 1949 doctorate Hitzig to Dr. med. with his dissertation on the development of the pig placenta. After years of assistance ( psychiatry , internal medicine , pediatrics ) in Basel , Bern and from 1953 at the Children's Hospital Zurich , he was a Research Fellow in Pediatrics at the Boston Children's Hospital in the United States in 1955/56 . There he acquired knowledge of clinical and experimental immunology , which he implemented back at the Children's Hospital in Zurich, thereby expanding pediatric immunology in Switzerland into a promising specialty.

Hitzig discovered an inherited hemoglobin anomaly ( Hb Zürich ). He founded child immunology in Europe. Hitzig's first description of congenital severe combined immunodeficiency ( SCID ) in 1958 was a pioneering achievement. As a result, Hitzig campaigned for the affected children to be cured through a bone marrow transplant , which was first achieved in Switzerland in 1987. Hitzig achieved an international reputation for his immunological and scientific work. In 1974 he described the immunodeficiency in transcobalamin -II deficiency.

He was in 1961 with the writing at the University of Zurich The blood protein image in infancy: Specific Protein determinations with special reference immunochemical methods habilitation and 1963 assistant professor appointed. 1965 Hitzig was extraordinary and in 1977 full professor of pediatrics. From 1975 he worked as deputy head physician, later as head of pediatric hematology until his retirement in 1989 at the Children's Hospital in Zurich.

His specialties within paediatrics were hematology, immunology and oncology .

From 1987 to 2000, Hitzig worked at the Swiss Academy of Medical Sciences (SAMS) in Basel, from 1986 to 1992 he was its vice-president and from 1992 to 2000 the president of its central ethics committee . In 2000 he was made an honorary member of the SAMS.

The Pediatric Immunology Working Group awards the Walter Hitzig Prize to young scientists in the field of pediatric immunology. The Center for Chronic Immunodeficiency at the University Medical Center Freiburg awards scholarships for young scientists as part of the Walter Hitzig program.
