Walter J. Pearson (* around 1904 in West Virginia , † after 1964) was an American businessman and politician .

Private life

Walter J. Pearson, son of Virginia Johnston (1874-1943) and the later Treasurer of State of Oregon Walter E. Pearson , was born around 1904 in West Virginia. He had an older sister named Virginia E. Pearson, who later became the wife of Reverend Philip P. Werlein, and a younger brother named David William Pearson, a Kansas City term insurance agent. His maternal grandfather was Congressman David Emmons Johnston . The family moved in 1908 to Portland ( Oregon ). His youth were overshadowed by the First World War and the following years by the Great Depression . He attended the Portland public schools. He then went to Washington High School and the School of Economics at the University of Oregon . Pearson worked for several insurance companies, including as an insurance agent in Seattle ( Washington ). During the Second World War he founded his own insurance agency in 1944, which over time has become one of the largest providers of insurance in Oregon. Pearson was married and had two children. He was a Baptist and a member of the American fraternities Kappa Sigma , Fraternal Order of Eagles, and Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, as well as the Freemasons , Shriners, and Gyro International .

Political career

Pearson was active in the Democratic Party . He served two terms in the House of Representatives and three terms in the Oregon Senate for Multnomah County . During this time he was President of the Senate in 1959. In the 1948 elections, he was elected Treasurer of State of Oregon. Pearson held the post from January 3, 1949 to January 5, 1953. He participated in 1952, 1956 and 1964 as a delegate for Oregon to the Democratic National Conventions . In 1960 he ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic nomination for governor of Oregon.
