Albert Holmes Brown (born January 5, 1823 in Baton Rouge , Louisiana , † December 27, 1910 in Oregon ) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ).

Career

Albert Holmes Brown, son of Mary Baker (1789-1832) and Asa Claxton Brown (1782-1843), was born in 1823 in East Baton Rouge Parish . His youth were overshadowed by the economic crisis of 1837 . During the Mexican-American War that followed , he served as a volunteer in his home state. After the end of the war he crossed the Great Plains towards California and reached it in 1849. He then led mule treks between San Francisco (California) and Portland (Oregon) until 1863 . During this time he married Roberta Heinrietta Hunstock on March 21, 1860 in Milford (Louisiana), daughter of Eliza Worth Holmes and George William Henry Hunstock. The couple had at least five children: Frances Eliza (1861-1920), Asa Lee (1864-1946), Roberta Winifred "Winnie" (1865-1910), Ella Louise (1868-1961) and Lelia Jeannette (1870-1876). Brown settled in Auburn, Oregon in 1863 . Back then it was still a thriving mine, today it no longer exists. The following years were overshadowed by the civil war.

In the elections in 1872 he was for Baker County in the Oregon State Senate voted. In 1874 he was elected Treasurer of State of Oregon. He held the post from September 14, 1874 to September 9, 1878.

That year, 1878, he retired from politics and returned to his Baker County farm, where he remained until 1897. At that time he moved to Portland, Oregon. He belonged to the Freemasons . In 1856 he joined the resident lodge in Yreka (California). Later he was Grand Master of the Lodge in Baker City, Oregon. After his death in 1910 he was cremated. His ashes were then interred in Riverview Cemetery in Portland.
