Phil Metschan

Phil S. Metschan Senior (* 1840 on the territory of the German Confederation , † March 27, 1920 in Multnomah County , Oregon ) was an American businessman, lawyer and politician ( Republican Party ).

Career

Nothing is known about Phil S. Metschan Senior's youth. He immigrated to the United States alone in 1854 in search of a better life . He settled first in Cincinnati ( Ohio down). Then he moved further west. He made stops in Kansas , Colorado and California . In 1862 he arrived in Portland, Oregon. From there he moved to the new mining town of Canyon City ( Grant County ) in 1863 . In the following years he went to commercial as well as other business ventures in the county.

He had at least eight children with his wife Marie C. Metschan (1841–1895), whom he married during this time: Frank F. (1866–1939), Anna (1869–1956), Emelia (1871–1933), Julia M. (1874-1932), Phil S. Junior (1876-1951), Otto W. (1878-1937), Henry A "Tony" (1879-1966) and Valeska Marie "Lillian" (1881-1973).

From 1868 to 1872 he was two terms County Treasurer of Grant County and from 1876 to 1878 County Clerk of Grant County. He became a magistrate in Grant County in 1882 - a post he held for four years. From 1888 to 1890 he was again County Clerk of Grant County. In the 1890 elections, he was elected as a Republican Treasurer of State of Oregon. He was re-elected in 1894. Metschan held the post from January 12, 1891 to January 9, 1899.

He was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows . From 1881 to 1882 he was Grand Master in the local lodge. He also belonged to the Freemasons . Over the years he held various offices there. In this context he was also the Grand Master of the Freemason Lodge of Oregon.

After his death in 1920 he was buried in the River View Cemetery in Portland.
