GW Webb

George W. Webb (born September 4, 1824 in Washington County , Maryland , † before June 16, 1920 in Oregon ) was an American businessman and politician ( Democratic Party ).

Career

George W. Webb, son of Mary and William C. Webb, was born and raised in Washington County in 1824. He had eleven siblings. His youth were overshadowed by the economic crisis of 1837 and the following years by the Mexican-American War . He moved to Missouri at the age of 18 . Webb spent the next 20 years there. In the course of this time, his intention to go west grew. He then moved to Boise ( Idaho ), where he worked the next two years in the mines. This time was overshadowed by the civil war. In 1864 he returned to Missouri. In the spring of 1865 he crossed the Great Plains with his family . She led her journey with her team of mules over hot sand and mountain passes. They arrived in Union County , where they lived for 10 years. 1875 they moved their residence to Pendleton ( Umatilla County ), where Webb spent most of the time from then on.

Over the years, his corporate holdings increased. His investments were made with care, and careful management made him prosper. During this time he was elected Treasurer of Umatilla County for a four-year term in 1876. He was also Alderman of Pendleton several times. In this context he supported many projects that led to construction projects and the development of the city. In the 1886 election, he was elected Treasurer of State of Oregon for a four-year term . He held the post from January 10, 1887 to January 12, 1891.

After the end of his tenure, he moved to La Grande (Union County). From then on he shuttled between that place and Pendleton.

His political loyalty has always been to the Democratic Party since the time the franchise was granted. He mostly took an active role in the party and promoted their interests. He did everything possible to ensure the growth and success of his party. He firmly believed that their principles were essential to good government.

After his death in 1920 he was buried in Grandview Cemetery in La Grande. His funeral took place on June 16, 1920.

Independent Order of Odd Fellows

Webb was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows . In 1855 he joined Shelby Lodge No. 16 in Missouri . Upon arriving in Oregon, he was a member of Eureka Lodge No. 32 in Pendleton and later one of the founding members of La Grande Lodge and its first Noble Grand. In 1910 he was awarded a Veteran's Gem by his home box for his 55 year membership . In this context, La Grande Lodge presented a portrait of Webb at night roll call, which today is one of the lodge's most valuable properties.

family

On March 28, 1849, he married Miss Mary E. McDaniel († December 5, 1895) from Virginia . The couple had five children: Dana, Elizabeth, Anna M., AG and Kate. The following is known about his children: Anna M. was the wife of JH Stevens of La Grande, AG lived in Wallace, Idaho and Kate was the wife of Frank Frazier of Pendleton.
