Edward Tevis "Ted" Wheeler (born August 31, 1962 in Portland , Oregon ) is an American politician ( Democratic Party ) and mayor of the city of Portland. His family is now the fifth generation of the family to settle in Oregon.

Career

He was born and raised in Portland, Oregon. He attended public schools there. His youth were overshadowed by the Vietnam War . Wheeler graduated from Lincoln High School. In 1985 he graduated from Stanford University with a bachelor's degree in economics . In the following years he did a Master of Business Administration at Columbia University and a Master of Public Policy at Harvard University . Wheeler has worked for several financial services companies including Bank of America and the Copper Mountain Trust .

Wheeler defeated the acting chairwoman of the Multnomah County Board of Commissioners Diane Linn in 2006 and then took up his new post in January 2007. On March 7, 2010, the incumbent Treasurer of State of Oregon Ben Westlund died of complications from lung cancer . Then appointed governor of Oregon Ted Kulongoski two days later Wheeler as the new Treasurer of State of Oregon to the vacancy to fill. In the Democratic primaries on May 18, 2010, he defeated his party colleague Rick Metsger and in the subsequent by-election in November 2010 for the remaining term of Westlund, the Republican Chris Telfer, the progressive Walt Brown and Michael Marsh of the Constitution Party. Westlund's term of office would have ended in 2013. Wheeler won the 2012 election for a full term. In May 2016, he won the election for mayor of the city of Portland . He was supported by his predecessors Vera Katz, Tom Potter and Sam Adams. He has been the successor to Charlie Hales, who did not run again, since January 2017.

Today he lived in southwest Portland, Oregon with his wife and daughter. As an eagle scout and an enthusiastic fresh air fanatic, he climbed the summit of Mount Everest in 2002 .
