Sig Unander

Sigfrid Benson "Sig" Unander senior (born August 3, 1913 in Colfax , Washington , † February 1, 1978 in Portland , Oregon ) was an American politician .

Career

The Childhood of Sigfrid Benson Unander senior was from the First World War overshadowed and youth years of the Great Depression . He studied political science at Stanford University , where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts . He then did a Masters of Business Administration from the Stanford Graduate School of Business . During the Second World War he served in the army for four and a half years, 39 months of which he was stationed overseas. During this period the United States awarded him two decorations and foreign governments four decorations. He also received six Battle Stars for participating in large-scale campaigns.

Unander was active in the Republican Party . He was treasurer on the State Central Committee, vice chairman of the Oregon Republican Club, a member of the Young Republicans, and a Precinct Committeeman. At the Republican National Conventions in 1940 and 1948 he took part for Oregon as an alternate delegate . He ran in May 1948 for the Republican nomination for the post of Treasurer of State of Oregon. At this point in time, he had already had initial experience in the state government. He was the Executive Assistant to former Oregon Governor Charles A. Sprague . While working there, he learned about the workflows on the Oregon State Board of Control . He led research projects in government institutions and studies on the public pension system in the public service as well as forestry, economic issues, agriculture and land use. He won a victory in the 1952 election for the post of Treasurer of State of Oregon. He was re-elected in 1956. He held the post from January 5, 1953 until his resignation on December 31, 1959. Unander ran for a seat in the US Senate in 1962 without success .

He was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Senior Vice Commander of the Military Order of World Wars . He was also a member of the Freemasons , the Eagles and the Alpha Tau Omega .

Trivia

At the 1932 Summer Olympics , he finished 12th in shooting in the preliminary rounds .
