Jefferson Davis Myers (born August 8, 1863 in Scio , Oregon , † December 29, 1943 in Portland , Oregon) was an American lawyer and politician ( Democratic Party ).

Career

Jefferson Davis Myers, son of Mary Priscilla McDonald (1841-1883) and David Dwight Myers (1834-1905), was born in a log cabin in Scio, Linn County , during the Civil War . On his father's side, he was of Dutch descent. His father came to California from Ohio , where he was born, in 1847 and from there to Oregon in 1854. On his mother's side he was of Scottish descent. His mother and her parents came to Oregon with a team of oxen from North Carolina at the age of 11 . Nothing is known about the childhood of Jefferson Davis Myers. Myers studied law at Willamette University in Salem, Oregon. He was admitted to the bar in Oregon, several other states , and the United States Supreme Court . In addition to his work as a lawyer, he was involved in agriculture and cattle breeding, but also went into banking. From 1902 to 1905 he presided over the Lewis and Clark Exposition.

Between 1885 and 1895 he sat in either the House of Representatives or the Oregon Senate . He was Treasurer of State of Oregon from 1924 to 1925 . In 1926 he was appointed commissioner on the United States Shipping Board - a post he held until 1936. He then served on the United States Maritime Commission for two years .

He was married twice. He first married Dr. Annice F. Jeffreys (1862–1911), a noted physician and vice president of the National Woman's Suffrage Association. After her death in 1913 he married his second wife Helene P. Rowe (1880-1944) in the Little Church Around the Corner in New York City .

Myers was a Colonel in the Oregon National Guard , a member of the Board of Regents at Oregon State College , a member of Oregon State Grange and National Grange, and founder and director of the Oregon Mutual Life Insurance Company. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church . He was also a Freemason and a member of the Shriners .

The last years of his life were overshadowed by the Second World War . He died in 1943 at his home at 1731 NE 12th Avenue in Portland of complications from pneumonia . His body was then interred in Portland's River View Cemetery .
