Walter Schöler (pedagogue)

Walter Schöler (born August 20, 1928 in Schwaan ; † May 23, 1994 in Vienna ) was a German-Austrian teaching scholar .

After the end of the Second World War he was trained as a new teacher for German and history and from August 1, 1946 was employed in Parchim in the school service of the state of Mecklenburg (-Vorpommern) . In 1948 he joined the SED. In 1950 he became the head of the Parchimer Fritz Reuter School. From 1952 he studied education at the University of Rostock . It was in 1955 at the University of Greifswald Dr. paed. PhD; in his dissertation he dealt with "the influence of philanthropism on the lower school system". Under Fritz Müller , he worked from 1957 at the University of Rostock as head of the teaching methodology department and became the first party secretary of the Philosophical Faculty. He justified u. a. the magazine Unser Ostseebezirk. Contributions to socialist education in history and civics , a component of a concept of local history to strengthen GDR patriotism. Nevertheless, his partisan commitment was criticized as too low.

Walter Schöler and his 12-year-old son fled the German Democratic Republic on November 9, 1960, first to West Berlin, then to the Federal Republic of Germany , where he remained unemployed and returned to Rostock in March 1961. There he was offered a less important position, which is why he finally left the GDR on May 2, 1961. He completed his habilitation in 1963 in Aachen with Johannes Zielinski with a paper on the history of science teaching. In 1968 he moved to the University of World Trade in Vienna , and from 1970 he helped to build the University of Education in Klagenfurt as founding rector .

He published more than 100 writings in the historical, educational and didactic fields. As a professor, he supervised more than 50 dissertations and habilitation theses.
