Live and act

After training and working for several years as an industrial clerk and later as a freelance journalist, Müller-Jentsch obtained his university entrance qualification through the second educational path at the Hessenkolleg (1961–1963) in Frankfurt am Main. From 1963 he studied sociology , political science and economics at the University of Frankfurt am Main and industrial relations at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). His teachers were Theodor W. Adorno , Jürgen Habermas and - at the LSE - Ralph Miliband . During his studies he was a member of the Socialist German Student Union (SDS).

From 1969 to 1981 he was a research associate at the Frankfurt Institute for Social Research . In 1982 he was appointed professor of social science at the University of Paderborn . In 1990 the University of Warwick in Great Britain invited him as a Leverhulme Visiting Professor for European Industrial Relations. From 1992 he taught as a professor for sociology with the chair for organization and co-determination in the faculty for social sciences at the Ruhr University in Bochum . In 2001 he retired. His work and research focuses on industrial sociology , specifically Industrial Relations , Sociology, unions , organizational sociology and the arts and literature sociology .

He has made fundamental theoretical and empirical contributions to the study of industrial relations. Among other things, he introduced the terms co-management and conflict partnership into the scientific discussion of industrial relations. During his studies at the London School of Economics (1966/67), a one-year research stay at the Industrial Relations Research Unit of the University of Warwick (1980/81) and his visiting professorship at the same university (1990), he familiarized himself with the British tradition of industrial relations and sought collegial cooperation with leading representatives of this discipline ( Hugh Clegg , George Bain, Richard Hyman ). With this fund he wrote the first German-language textbook on industrial relations: Sociology of Industrial Relations . In the late phase of his teaching activities and after his retirement he devoted himself more to the sociology of art and published with the publication Die Kunst in der Gesellschaft a “systematic representation of the art system with its components and institutions”.

Müller-Jentsch is the sole editor of the series of industrial relations and, together with Hansjörg Weitbrecht , David Marsden, Dieter Sadowski , Jörg Sydow and Franz Traxler, founding co-editor of the industrial relations magazine - the magazine for work, organization and management  : The German Journal of Industrial Relations . He was a long-time reviewer of the German Research Foundation for two industrial sociological priority programs and was involved as a member of the board of the German section of the International Industrial Relations Association (GIRA) from 1996 to 2003 . As a member of the founding board of the Ruhr Area Library Foundation in Bochum, he was a member of the board from 1998 to 2012 and was co-editor of the publications of the Ruhr Area Library Foundation during this time .

With occasional publications, Müller-Jentsch has also emerged as a poet. After early political poetry from the 1960s - published in Peter Hamm's anthology Perspectives. Young lyric poets from the German-speaking area - his late poetry is articulated in a natural, elegiac tone.

Müller-Jentsch lives in Düsseldorf-Kaiserswerth .
