Walther Marshal von Bieberstein

Walther Freiherr Marschall von Bieberstein (born May 29, 1930 - September 4, 2014 ) was a German diplomat who was ambassador to Bangladesh between 1979 and 1985 and ambassador to Myanmar from 1985 to 1995 .

Life

Marschall von Bieberstein came from the old Meißnian noble family Marschall von Bieberstein , who in the 13th century held the hereditary marshal and treasury office of the Margraves of Meissen . He completed a law degree and completed his doctorate as Dr. jur. at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg in 1958 with a dissertation with the title On the problem of the recognition of the two German governments under international law. He then joined the Foreign Service and, after completing his training as an attaché, found various positions at the headquarters of the Foreign Office in Bonn and at missions abroad . Among other things, he was Legation Secretary in Section 500 (General International Law). On September 28, 1963 he traveled to Bucharest with Gisela Rheker for final talks about setting up a commercial agency in Romania .

In 1965, Marschall von Bieberstein was employed as a speaker in Section V 1, International Law and State Treaties, headed by Legation Councilor First Class Dedo von Schenck . In 1971 he acted as counselor and chargé d'affaires at the embassy in Cambodia after diplomatic relations were broken off in 1969.

Later he was first class councilor and graduate of a course at the Royal College of Defense Studies (RCDS) in London , before returning to Germany on January 5, 1976, when he became head of the General International Law Unit (Unit 500) in the Foreign Office.

As successor to Wolf-Dietrich Schilling , Marschall von Bieberstein became ambassador to Bangladesh in 1979 and held this post until he was replaced by Klaus Max Franke in 1985. In 1985, he replaced Helmut Türk, who had retired, as ambassador to Myanmar . He held this position for ten years until he retired himself in 1995, after which Wolfgang Wiesner became his successor there.

Marschall von Bieberstein was involved in the board of trustees of the Munich- based Myanmar Foundation. For his services he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon .
