The Warmetal Viaduct , also known as the Zierenberger Viaduct , is an approximately 140 m long, single-track railway viaduct on the Volkmarsen – Vellmar-Obervellmar railway line near Zierenberg in the northern Hessian district of Kassel, built in 1896 . As an arch bridge with eight arches, it is the largest bridge on this railway line. The railway bridge is a cultural monument according to the Hessian Monument Protection Act .

Geographical location

The Warmetal Viaduct is part of the Volkmarsen – Vellmar-Obervellmar railway in the Habichtswald Nature Park between the Zierenberg core city in the north-west and the Zierenberg tunnel in the north-east with the village of Fürstenwald on the other side of it and belonging to the municipality of Calden . The bridge leads in the Zierenberger Grund between the Großer Bärenberg ( 600.7  m above sea  level ) in the west-southwest, the Großer Schreckenberg ( 460  m ) in the north and the Kleiner Dörnberg ( 481.6 m ) to the east , a north-west foothill of  the Hohe Dörnberg ( 578.7  m ), via the Diemel tributary Warme and the state road  3211, which connects Zierenberg with the Habichtswald village of Dörnberg to the southeast . The viaduct is located within the framework of its track structure at about 280  m above sea level. NN . To the north of its eastern abutment is the Horkenhausen mill .

Below the Warmetal Viaduct is the fauna-flora-habitat area of ​​the Bachlauf der Warme from Ehlen to Liebenau (FFH no. 4521-305), which is 0.54 km² in size, and to the east of the bridge is the FFH area Dörnberg, Immelburg and Helfenstein (FFH no. 4622-303), which is 4.33 km². In addition, the 1.16 km² nature reserve Dörnberg (NSG no. 81531), founded in 1978, extends a little east of the viaduct .
