action

Fifteen-year-old Tomoko Kuroki believed that when she entered high school she would become popular because she is well versed in the world of otome games. In reality, she finds that she has become an uncooperative and lacking social skills loner , and for the first time in years she has been forced to look what she really is. In the course of the action Tomoko tries to improve her social status and skills and tries to cope with everyday school life. There are tragicomic moments when she is reminded of who she actually is.

reception

The second volume, which was published on May 22, 2012, took 10th place on the Oricon charts in its opening week . As of July 2013, the series has printed more than 1.5 million copies. The manga also gained popularity abroad after fan translations of the series were published on the English-language imageboard 4chan .

WataMote has been the subject of debate, particularly in the treatment of social anxiety and the main character Tomoko. The subject was whether the series is a comedy or an investigation into a neurosis with many different opinions on whether or not the subject should be humorous. Still, the anime adaptation received praise.

Richard Eisenbeis gave the series a very negative review at Kotaku and described the series as the "meanest" anime he has ever viewed as a critic and fan. Eisenbeis criticized that the protagonist's social phobia was the main source of humor and that this was a humiliating and ridiculous portrayal of the mentally ill .

Anime News Network compared the series with other works dealing with the subject of social outsiders , such as NHK ni Yōkoso! and genshiken . In addition, Tomoko is portrayed as a complete anti- Moe character as she is angry and vengeful , rather than a typical happy girl who is simply socially awkward. Critics have praised the series as insightful and straight forward in handling social maladjustment.
