Wawrzyniec Grzymała Goślicki ( Latin Laurentius Grimaldius Goslicius ; * 1530 ; † 1607 ) was a Polish bishop , political thinker and philosopher . He achieved a high level of awareness in Europe through his main work “De optimo senatore” .

Life

After studying at the Jagiellonian University in Cracow and in Padua , he joined the Roman Catholic Church . In 1569 he was appointed to the royal chancellery. From then on he served two Polish kings, Sigismund II. August and Stephan Báthory . In 1586 he was appointed to the episcopal office in Kamieniec Podolski . It followed on January 22, 1590 the bishopric in Chełm , on May 10, 1591 Przemyśl and 1601 Poznan . Goślicki was a politically very active man and a person valued by his contemporaries. He was a strong advocate of religious tolerance in Poland. Due to his influence and a letter to the Pope , the Counter-Reformation forces , namely the Jesuits , were forbidden to establish their own schools in Krakow. He was the only Catholic clergyman who confirmed the Warsaw Confederation Articles with his signature in 1587.

Goślicki's book “De optimo senatore” (first published in 1568, Venice ) subsequently appeared in two translations in English : “A commonwealth of good counsaile” (1607) and “The Accomplished Senator. in Two Books. Written Originally in Latin, by Laurence Grimald Gozliski, ... Done Into English, from the Edition Printed at Venice, in the Year 1568. by Mr. Oldisworth “ (London, 1733). In this book Goślicki argued that the law is over a ruler, that is, a monarch , and that rule against the will of the majority of the population is illegal. Many of the existing in his book ideas, contained the foundations of the Polish-Lithuanian "noble democracy" ( 1505 -1 795) and based on the writings from the 14th century of Stanisław of Skarbimierz .

In England the idea of a king's responsibility to his subjects was so revolutionary that Goślicki's book was long banned there. His ideas contributed significantly to the establishment of future national constitutions. His book was read and commented on by Thomas Jefferson , who was a friend and mentor of the creators of the United States Constitution and also had a significant influence on the development of Europe's first modern, codified national constitution, the May 3, 1791 Constitution .

He found his final resting place in the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul in Poznan .
