We Are Young Money is the first sampler from the record label Young Money Entertainment . It was released on December 22, 2009.

backgrounds

In 2009, the popularity of the Young Money label was at its peak, due in particular to the growing popularity of the original founder, Lil Wayne . With his album Tha Carter III , released a year earlier, he achieved commercial and critical success, especially in the USA , which was awarded triple platinum and made the rapper one of the most sought-after representatives of his genre. In the meantime, he began building a crew and was ultimately able to assemble a total of eleven artists, including himself, on the record label. On We Are Young Money they acted for the first time as equal performers, although most of them were still unknown to a broad audience at the time of publication. Some of them, especially Nicki Minaj , Tyga and the already established Drake , would expand their careers and celebrate chart successes in the coming years.

The songs of the album were by Cool & Dre , Tha Bizness , Kane Beatz , Chase N. Cashe , B.CaRR , Willy Will , Andrew "POP" Wansel , Mr. Pyro , The Audible , PHENOM , David Banner , Infamous and Onhel produced , they were written mainly by the participating interpreters themselves; only sporadically these were supported by alternative songwriters .

Three singles were released from the work: Every Girl (referred to on the album as Every Girl in the World ), BedRock and Roger That . The first two were commercial successes that managed to reach positions ten and two on the US charts. In comparison, Roger That only sold moderately and landed at position 56. The song Steady Mobbin ' , which was not decoupled, also climbed to 48th place in the charts.

Music and lyrics

All titles on the album can be assigned to the hip-hop genre, as the label specializes in this style. Accordingly, almost all of the artists who were under contract at the time of publication are rappers ; only Shanell is a musician who acts exclusively as a singer . However, several of them often use the autotune vocal effect , so that the rapped passages sometimes sound melodic. The members take turns on the songs in their lectures; There are no solo songs and with only a few exceptions the participants usually only take on one part per track, whereby the number of titles on how many songs the individual performers can be heard on varies greatly. The beats are mostly electronic and belong to Southern Hip-Hop . The lyrics on the album are sometimes strongly sexually influenced, while others fall back on a self-portrayal that is typical of the genre, in which the performers extol their skills , their success and their lifestyle . Several of the artists use a large number of puns , including homophones , comparisons , ambiguities and suitcase words .

Cover design

On the cover artwork are standing or sitting in a completely in ten of the eleven members of Young Money Black held Lounge to see. All musicians wear at least one item of clothing in the said color to match . On a table in front of them vases , one of them with roses filled, and a bowl of red apples . Nicki Minaj holds one of them in her hand . Next to it is a stool on which Gudda Gudda and Lil Chuckee are stretching their feet . The only rapper in the group who is not sitting in the group, Lil Wayne, is shown in large black and white in the background and covers about the upper half of the motif. Above him is the name of the label in large letters set with white jewels . At the bottom of the cover is a narrow red bar on which the album title is written in black letters.

criticism

We Are Young Money received mixed or average reviews. It was felt that the label's two best-known musicians, Lil Wayne and Drake, would make the biggest impression and steal the show from everyone else, while the less successful performers hardly stand out. Only Nicki Minaj, who was still considered a newcomer when the album was released, was universally praised for her contributions and her potential was recognized . Overall, the album would be largely entertaining and offer selective highlights, but there is a lack of innovation and content.

success

In the US, We Are Young Money was a commercial success that managed to reach number nine in the charts. The album was awarded gold there. In the rest of the world it could not prove itself in the charts.
