action
Johanne is a nurse in her mid thirties who works in a Norwegian hospital. During a meal with her family on the first Sunday of Advent, she lies to her family when they question her about her current partner and claims to be in a relationship. She promises to bring her boyfriend to Christmas dinner. In order to keep up the lie, Johanne tries to find a friend, so she goes to a speed dating and looks for a partner on the internet. She agrees to meet several men, including 18-year-old Jonas and the much older Bengt Erik. She does not rule out same-sex partners either and has a brief sexual encounter with her colleague Eira.
Ultimately, however, all attempts fail until her colleague Dr. Henrik is approached and he reveals to her that he is in love with her. Before she can react, however, the two of them are interrupted by a medical emergency. So Johanne goes to her parents' Christmas dinner without a partner, during dinner the doorbell rings and the first season ends with you seeing Johanne open the door, but not who rang the bell.

critic
Oliver Armknecht describes Christmas at home at Film-rezensions.de as a series with a rather cheerful nature, which Johanne brings together with some people who have a damaged roof. At the same time, there is a serious side to the series, not highlighting funny topics such as marriages that break up slowly or relationships with a large age difference. In his opinion, Christmas at home is realistic, does not take you to another place, but simply keeps you company in everyday life.
More problem-conscious than the sugar-sweet Hallmark Christmas films that play far away from any real- life reality , but not such a brutal holiday deconstruction as Die Hard : With [...] [Christmas at home] Netflix has found just the right amount of Christmas joy and eye rolling before all the seasonal madness , writes Julian Miller onquotemeter.de .
Leah Thomas writes for the online presence of the American Cosmopolitan that she loves the extraordinary twists and turns of the series and that in the end it is not about whether Johanne finds a friend or not, but rather about appreciating what you have in your life.
