Karlsmühle

The Karlsmühle an der Ruwer winery is located in Mertesdorf / Lorenzhof near Trier ( Rhineland-Palatinate ). It belongs to the Moselle wine-growing region , " Ruwer area ".

The remains of the oldest Roman stone mill north of the Alps were found near the mill . Mills were built at the time by the Roman engineer Vitruvius . In the year 371 AD the Roman writer Ausonius wrote in his poem Mosella : The Ruwer turns the grain-grinding stones in dizzy eddies and pulls the screeching saws through smooth marble blocks . In 1843 a Roman sarcophagus lid was found at Karlsmühle, which shows half-length portrait of a couple. The last time the Swedish archaeologist Örjan Wikander examined the area of the Karlsmühle in 1989 and described the Karlsmühle as the oldest mill north of the Alps to date in the international journal Opuskula Romana . In the meantime, this statement has to be limited to “the oldest sawmill north of the Alps”, because in 2009 the remains of a grain mill from the first century AD were discovered on the Inde near Düren , see watermill on the Inde from the first century .

The mill came to the Himmerod Monastery in 1325 and to the St. Maximin Monastery in Trier in 1457 . After its secularization in 1803 by Napoleon Bonaparte , the mill came into family ownership : Since that time, in addition to the mill, viticulture has also been carried out in the Lorenzhöfer Felslay and Lorenzhöfer Mäuerchen sites, and later also in the Kaseler Kehrnagel and the Kaseler Nies'chen . The property in these sloping to steep locations today covers around 14 hectares, on which predominantly Riesling , but also Müller-Thurgau , Pinot Blanc , Dornfelder , Pinot Noir and Elbling are cultivated. The owner is Peter Geiben, whose winery also includes the Hotel Karlsmühle. The Ruwer-Hochwald-Radweg runs in the immediate vicinity on the route of the former Hochwaldbahn .
