Wellendingen is a district of the Baden-Württemberg town of Bonndorf in the Black Forest in the Waldshut district .

geography

Wellendingen is located in the southern Black Forest a few kilometers below the end of the Ehrenbach valley below the town of Bonndorf. While the beginning of the Ehrenbachtal is still in the shell limestone , the brook cuts the red sandstone in and below Wellendingen and connects to the basement with the so-called Wellendinger granite.

history

Wellendingen is first mentioned in a document in 1352, but was already settled in the early days, which is proven by finds from Alemannic graves. The Lords of Rechberg owned the village for the most part, it is unclear from which rule they took it over, it is accepted by the Lords of Roggenbach , who later regained it, but then returned it to the Rechbergers, because Elisabeth von Rechberg zu Hohenrechberg sold it in 1460 the village of Wellendingen to the Lords of Lupfen . The place came to the Lords of Mörsperg by succession . In 1609 they sold to the St. Blasien monastery , and Wellendingen became part of the Bonndorf county . The monastery Berau , however, had, as well as St. Blaise, already previously fiefs held in place. With the dissolution of the St. Blasien monastery in secularization , Wellendingen came to the Grand Duchy of Baden and was an independent municipality until it was incorporated on January 1, 1972.

Religion and church

Neo-Romanesque Church of St. Nicholas

The first church is mentioned in 1360. Wellendingen was always a branch church of Bonndorf. The church is dedicated to Saint Nicholas . There is evidence of the first larger church building after the Thirty Years War, which was consecrated by the Bishop of Constance in 1672 . This church was replaced by a neo-Romanesque church in 1872/1873 . Like the main church in Bonndorf , it was designed by Franz Joseph Simmler in the Nazarene style. During the renovation in 1960, the grindings and altars from this period were removed. From the former high altar, the figures of the fourteen helpers with the statue of St. Nicholas now adorn the choir. The Wellendingen branch community is now part of the Bonndorf-Wutach pastoral care unit .

economy

Wellendingen is characterized by agriculture and craft. For this purpose, a flour mill was operated on the Ehrenbach in Wellendingen, which still exists today in an expanded form. At the same time there were two sawmills in Wellendingen and the wave saw in Steinatal . In addition to the agricultural businesses, there are now several medium-sized and craft businesses in the fields of vehicle and wood technology as well as the construction industry. In the last few years the intention was to set up a quarry below Wellendingen, in the Brunnadern district, for the extraction of the Granite wave thing. On the one hand, there was massive resistance from the population, and on the other hand, an expert report revealed that the granite at the planned mining site is covered by a layer of red sandstone up to 25 m thick, which makes mining uneconomical.

traffic

Wellendingen is on the federal highway 315 , from which the road branches off at the lower end of the village via the “Dinstig” a steep section to Wittlekofer Höhe and further over the plateau of the “Alp” to Stühlingen and as a transition to the Wutach - and Steinatal. The “Dinstig” should stand for business trips, as in previous years the vehicles had to do pre-tensioning and braking service to overcome the ascent. Wellendingen is served by the bus routes Stühlingen - Bonndorf and Waldshut - Bonndorf.

Culture and sights

Memorial plaque on the birthplace of Constantin Fehrenbach

In the east of Wellendingen, on the ridge to Brunnadern, the nature reserve Steppenheide Hardt extends at an altitude of approx. 850 m , where the southern Black Forest cycle path leads past. Constantin Fehrenbach , Chancellor of the Weimar Republic, was born in Wellendingen . At the house where he was born, the former schoolhouse, a plaque commemorates Fehrenbach today. A street in Wellendingen is also named after him. The first name of the politician is written with K on both , although he was baptized in the form with C.
