Werner Dorst

Werner Dorst (born January 6, 1914 in Neundorf bei Plauen ; † December 7, 1990 ) was a German educational scientist , prorector and professor at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena .

Life

Dorst, the son of a commercial employee , studied history , philosophy , geography and art history after graduating from high school and became a teacher in 1936 . In 1937 he became a member of the National Socialist German Workers' Party (NSDAP). In 1939 he became a study assessor in Halle and in 1941 passed the state examination for higher education.

In 1941 Dorst was drafted into the German Wehrmacht and fought with the rank of first lieutenant in World War II . In the summer of 1943 he was taken prisoner by the Soviets and in 1944 became an employee of the anti-fascist National Committee Free Germany (NKFD). After six months of training, in 1946 he became a lecturer and later assistant for history and philosophy at the central Antifa school in Krasnogorsk .

In 1949 Dorst returned to Germany and in February became a senior high school officer in the school department of the German Administration for National Education . In the same year he became a member of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED). In January 1950 Dorst became deputy director, from December 1950 provisional director and from May 1951 director of the German Central Pedagogical Institute (DPZI). In 1952 he was at the Humboldt University of Berlin with a thesis on "Basics of Education, education and education in the GDR," published in 1953, his doctorate .

In July 1958 Dorst came into conflict with the party and state leadership of the GDR and was dismissed on charges of “revisionist tendencies” and temporarily “delegated” to the Ministry of Popular Education for “special work ”.

In 1958 Dorst became a lecturer at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena and received his habilitation there in 1960 with a thesis on the "Education System in the Federal Republic of Germany" . In 1961 he became a full professor for systematic pedagogy and was later for many years director of the educational sciences section and prorector of the university.

Dorst has been a full member of the GDR Academy of Pedagogical Sciences (APW) since it was founded in 1970 .
