Werner Krawietz

Werner Krawietz (born December 14, 1933 in Beuthen (Upper Silesia); † August 27, 2019 ) was a German legal philosopher and university professor. From 1980 to 1982, Krawietz was Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Münster .

Life

After graduating from high school in Quakenbrück , Krawietz studied law , philosophy and sociology in Münster, Freiburg and Graz from 1954 to 1957 . In 1960 he received his doctorate in political science in Graz . After the second state examination in 1963, he received his doctorate in law in 1965 in Münster. From 1964 to 1966 he worked as a personal advisor to the rector of the University of Münster, and then until 1974 as a research assistantat the Institute for Public Law and Politics. The law faculty of the University of Münster habilitated him in 1974 and awarded him the venia legendi for public law , legal theory and legal sociology and in the same year appointed him Scientific Councilor and professor for general legal theory and legal philosophy with public law. In 1979 he was appointed full professor. As a result, Krawietz took over the chair for legal theory, legal and social philosophy and thus the successor to his academic teacher Helmut Schelsky . From 1980 to 1982 he was Dean of the Law Faculty. For many years, Krawietz was the editor of the legal theory magazine , which he was involved in founding in 1970 alongside Karl Engisch , HLA Hart , Hans Kelsen , Ulrich Klug and Karl Popper .

Krawietz was an honorary doctor a. a. the University of Helsinki , the Eötvös Loránd University , the Università del Salento and the University of Tartu as well as a member of the Finnish Academy of Sciences and the Russian Academy of Sciences . He was the first lawyer to receive an honorary doctorate from the Russian Academy of Sciences. Krawietz was a board member of the International Association for Legal and Social Philosophy .

Krawietz particularly emerged with publications in the field of basic legal research, legal and state theory , the analysis of political systems and comparative institutional and system theory. Furthermore, he dealt with the new constitutionalism in the post-Soviet constitutional and rule of law as well as the transformation of legal systems.
