geography

Werningsleben is located in the Thuringian Basin at an altitude of about 300 meters between Arnstadt in the southwest and Erfurt in the north. The area is characterized by flat arable land that gently rises to the Riechheimer Berg in the east . The village itself lies on the Marbach, a tributary of the Wipfra .

history

Elevation at the village church

Around 796 Werningsleben was first mentioned as Werningzelbo in a register of the Hersfeld monastery . The place name goes back to the Germanic tribe of the Warnen . They called their real estate with Levo, Lebo or Leibo "honestly left behind". Many villages still have the name ending -leben . For more than 200 years the place belonged to the von Henneberg dynasty until 1357 . Until 1802, Werningsleben was a kitchen village in the City Office of Erfurt and thus part of Kurmainz . Subsequently, the place belonged to Prussia and from 1807 to 1814 to the French Principality of Erfurt , then from 1816 to 1945 again to Prussia or the district of Erfurt . In 1952 it was spun off from the district of Erfurt and came to the district of Arnstadt , which became part of the Ilm district in 1994 . Since January 24, 1974, Werningsleben is no longer an independent municipality, but belongs to Kirchheim , which was incorporated into the Wachsenburg district on January 1, 2019. The place has retained its character as a street village along the Marbach to this day.

Attractions

  • The baroque village church is consecrated to Saint George and was rebuilt from 1706 in place of a previous building, with the late Gothic tower and other parts of the old building largely preserved. Two years later it was inaugurated as the "All Saints Church". The church tower, which dates from the 15th century, was restored in 2003. The wall painting, which was created around 1500 and depicts Saint Christopher , is particularly worth seeing . The painting was exposed in the course of the last renovation behind the first gallery. Further renovation measures with the active help of the local residents made it possible for the church to shine in new splendor for its 300th anniversary in 2008. The organ, which dates from the 18th century, is currently not playable, it was no longer in use for several decades. At the north entrance of the cemetery there is a stone with the year 1564 and the Erfurt coat of arms.
On the north side of the church there is a covered, wooden, single-flight gallery.
  • The Waidmühlstein recalls the years of woad cultivation between 1579 and 1604.

Economy and Infrastructure

Werningsleben, like the entire north of the Ilm district, is characterized by agriculture. To the east of the village lies the Werningsleben forest . The much-traveled hiking trail from Erfurt to Riechheimer Berg runs along its eastern edge ; in this section it is identical to a stretch of the main Jena-Eisenach hiking trail. Roads connect the place with Erfurt and Bechstedt-Wagd in the north, Witzleben and Gügleben in the east, Stadtilm and Elxleben in the south and Arnstadt and Kirchheim in the west.
