action

When the Iraq war breaks out, all experienced war correspondents are withdrawn from Afghanistan and sent to Iraq. Since Kim Baker is one of the few remaining who have no children and no husband, she is to become the new reporter in Kabul . Since things are not going very well with her boyfriend and she is bored with her office job, she agrees.

On the spot, however, she realizes that everyday life is different from what she had imagined. Tanya Vanderpoel, Iain MacKelpie, and other colleagues spend much of their time with alcohol, drugs, and sex. At the beginning Kim tries to keep his distance and asks several American soldiers what they think about the war in Afghanistan. Among other things, a report about a Marine on the air makes it , who claims that there is so little going on in this mission that he no longer reloads his weapons, as the probability of injuring himself by reloading is higher than by the Taliban to die.

Her zeal gives her the opportunity to interview Justice Minister-designate Ali Mossoud Sadiq. He is very impressed by her and from now on tries to make sexual offers again and again, but she refuses. After the interview with Sadiq, like most of the other contributions by Kim, is not broadcast, she is increasingly frustrated and embarks on various drinking bouts with her colleagues. When she finds out that her boyfriend is cheating on her, she decides to stay in Afghanistan longer and begins an affair with Iain MacKelpie.

Using a risky approach, Tanya manages to post video footage of a drone attack in which she was injured. As a result, Kim and Tanya get into an argument. Kim accuses Tanya of doing anything for a good story, while Tanya insults Kim as hypocritical and tells her that the marine she interviewed was transferred to Helmand for his testimony and lost both legs there due to an IED .

Kim then decides not to stay in Afghanistan any longer and wants to meet her now new boyfriend Iain in Glasgow . However, shortly before his flight to Glasgow, he was given the opportunity to pursue an important story. On the way over a mountain pass, however, he is kidnapped, which leads Kim to fly to Afghanistan again to help Iain. She gets Sadiq to get her information on Iain's whereabouts, passes it to General Hollanek and persuades him to allow a camera team to accompany the rescue mission. She uses the resulting images to finally get out of Kabul and get a job in Washington, DC .

Arrived in the US, Kim visits the Marine, who was transferred because of her interview and lost both legs. To her surprise, this guy doesn't blame Kim for his mutilation.

WTF received mostly positive reviews. According to the Rotten Tomatoes film website , 67% of film critics rated the film positively, based on 194 reviews.

"The film offers a fresh look at the adrenaline-laced lifestyle of war correspondents and a timely criticism of TV news. And it delivers some laughs, too. ( The film offers a fresh look at the adrenaline-soaked lifestyle of war reporters and a contemporary review of post-rite broadcasts. It also offers a few laughs. ) "

"A fresh, intelligent, biting look at the profession of war reporter, in which" Saturday Night Live "icon Tina Fey shows that she is not only good at comedy."

“Not bad, but the tone is inconsistent, also because the realistically depicted war takes precedence over the humorous approaches and these often seem out of place. Only partially successful. "
