White Terror is a documentary film by Daniel Schweizer from 2005 . It deals with the global right-wing extremist white power movement .

action

The film takes its starting point in the Swiss municipality of Interlaken . Just outside the community, 19-year-old Marcel von Allmen was killed by his own comrades and then sunk in the lake. The young people had given themselves the name "Order of the Aryan Knights" and tried to get involved in right-wing extremist networks. Allmen had violated the promise of silence and was killed by his friends. Daniel Schweizer goes in search of the worldwide operating white power network " Blood and Honor ".

The first stop on his journey is Sweden. There they meet the welfare recipient Marko Niilo Kristian Järvinen (called "Jäsä"), who is behind the right-wing extremist video and DVD series "War Reporter". In Sweden he also meets with Erik Blücher (actually Erik Nilsen), a right-wing extremist politician and a senior member of Blood & Honor Scandinavia. An interview with Stieg Larsson and the head of the Swedish police shows that the Swedish government has no interest in stopping the right-wing extremist excesses. Likewise, the police hardly have any legal means to take action against the extremists.

The documentary moves to Germany shortly, where a live recording of Kraftschlag from the “War Reporter” video is shown and a young neo-Nazi is shown selling several right-wing rock CDs. Germany is described as the country with the “strictest legislation” against right-wing extremism.

In the USA , Swiss and his team meet Bart, an editing technician and distributor of the war reporter videos. He gives insights into production and sales. A planned interview with Tom Metzger from White Aryan Resistance (WAR) has to be canceled because Metzger wanted to pay for the interview time. Schweizer interviewed Timothy Sel , a former rights activist who has since dropped out, Billy Roper from White Revolution and Richard Butler from the Creativity Movement and the Aryan Nations . Other right-wing extremists are also being interviewed. A large-scale demonstration is shown in Valley Forge , but it is met with massive protests and is relatively small. The supporters of various right-wing extremist factions chant racist and anti-Semitic slogans there. Schweizer had to interrupt his interviews during the counter-demonstration, however, because the police had seen him get off the right-wing extremists' bus.

Schweizer is now on his way to Russia . Billy Roper arranged the contact. Around 50,000 violent right-wing extremists are said to be in the former Soviet Union. There he meets Dimitri Djomuschkin , a politician from the Slavyanskaya Sojuz, who openly admits to advocating militant actions against foreigners and anti-fascists . A concert by the RAC band Kolovrat is disguised as a folklore evening. Musicians from the tourist band and Zyklon B are also shown. Schweizer reports on the murder of the anti-fascist Girenko, one of the leading experts. The murder was never solved. A human rights activist from the Helsinki Forum and a member of the Russian Anti-Defamation League report on repression against anti-fascists and describe that right-wing extremists in Russia could operate almost without state control.

The film closes with pictures of a member of the French Front National speaking at a Slavic Union event, while a local resident raises his right arm in a Hitler salute behind him .

background

Daniel Schweizer had the idea for White Terror when a videotape of the war reporter video was leaked to him as part of the filming of Skinhead Attitude . White Terror marks the end of his skinhead trilogy, which began in 1998 with Skin or Die and was continued with Skinhead Attitude in 2003. A total of five production companies from four countries were involved in the creation of the film: Dschoint Ventschr Filmproduktion and Horizon Films from Switzerland, Little Bear Production from France , Making Movies from Finland and Cameo Film from Germany.

In addition to the new film material, he also used archive material from his previous films. In the meantime, both Richard Butler and Stieg Larsson had died.

Daniel Schweizer's film found it difficult to distribute. He was also very often prevented from doing his work by the police, who repeatedly forbade him from filming at demonstrations.

A shoot for the German part was made with the help of Sunny Bastards , who ultimately also took over sales in Germany. It should give a differentiated picture of the skinhead scene and at the same time show how the right-wing music scene in the apolitical Oi! - Camp tried to gain a foothold. For this purpose interviews were conducted with Willi Wucher ( Pöbel & Gesocks ), Deutscher W. ( OHL ) and two journalists from the Fanzine Plastic Bomb . These recordings did not end up in the film, but are included in the 2DVD special edition.

White Terror was shown for the first time on March 26, 2007 on German and French television on the cultural channel arte . The DVD was released in German-speaking countries on May 3, 2008. In addition to the Germany shoot, the DVD also features two reports on riots in Eastern Europe and Combat 18 , as well as unedited raw material, including a Ku Klux Klan march as a bonus .

criticism

Despite several television broadcasts, the documentary was hardly received by the press. An edition of the Kulturzeit broadcast by 3sat was dedicated to film. Otherwise, the reviews varied from “brave” to “superfluous”. In particular, the director was accused of not showing a way out of the dilemma and not taking any position.

“An informative documentary film about new channels of distribution and structures of right-wing extremist organizations that operate as international networks and use the latest forms of communication. The uncommented film relies on the self-exposure potential of numerous, sometimes shocking statements by convinced racists. "

“As with the last films, White Terror will also attract criticism if viewed superficially: Due to the very factual presentation of the situation, which is hardly condemned by the Swiss, the film material can also animate rights. The film shows that this is unfortunately no longer necessary: the right-wing extremists are already grouped and are 'breeding' followers. Unfortunately, the Swiss cannot offer us a better solution than to remind us to look. And that's why White Terror should be viewed. "
