How do you marry a king? is a DEFA fairy tale film from 1969 directed by Rainer Simon . The film, made in the DEFA studios in the GDR , is based on Grimm's fairy tale The Clever Farmer's Daughter .

action

A farmer and his clever daughter received a piece of land from the king. The farmer finds a golden box on the ground, but it has no lid. Although his daughter tries to stop him, the farmer brings the box to the king - who thinks that the farmer has stolen the lid of the box and has the farmer locked up.

When the farmer's daughter asks the king for mercy, he gives her three riddles. She solves them, the farmer is released and the king marries the beautiful and clever daughter. Because the king is often unjust to his subjects and the farmer's daughter therefore repeatedly interferes in his government business, a break occurs. The king throws the clever farmer's daughter out of the castle, but allows her to take her loved one with her. The next morning comes and the king finds himself in the farmer's room - he was the farmer's daughter's dearest. The king pretends to be defeated by so much prudence and he and the farmer's daughter move back to the royal palace together.
