The Vienna Penzing train station is located in Vienna's 14th district of Penzing and, as a train station and station for the Vienna S-Bahn, is a public transport hub. It connects the Westbahn with the connecting railway and the suburb line .
history
The station was inaugurated on November 19, 1858 by the private Kaiserin-Elisabeth-Bahn (KEB) together with the Western Railway, the celebrations took place on site. In 1860 the connecting line to Meidling followed, making the station a separation station . On May 11, 1898, the suburban line belonging to the Vienna steam light rail went into operation, from then on Penzing was a railway junction . Since the latter belonged to the Commission for Transport Systems in Vienna , it was now also a shared station of two different railway administrations . Penzing was the only light rail station in the closer network for which Otto Wagner did not build a new reception building. Nevertheless, he was responsible for the expansion of the station at the time, he erected the wooden platform roof including a small access building for the suburban line, the structural completion of these systems took place in November 1896. Also the well-known light rail railings , which serve to secure the stairs in Penzing, come from this time.
Due to its proximity to Schönbrunn Palace , until 1918, despite the Hietzing court pavilion , it was often used as the departure station of the special train for the emperor's trips, but also for the arrival of foreign state guests. When Emperor Franz Joseph received a telegram on June 28, 1914 with the news of the assassination of the heir to the throne Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo, he returned from his summer stay in Ischl and was picked up by Archduke Karl at the Penzing train station. This was a clear sign to the public that the empire had a new heir to the throne.
Today the station serves as a stop for the S-Bahn lines S45 and S50. It was completely renovated in 2015/2016. The original platforms 1 and 2 were merged, all platforms were raised and lifts installed.
