The Wietkiekenberg ( Low German wiet kieken = to look far / see; often also Wietkikenberg ) is 124.7  m above sea level. NHN the highest elevation of the Zauche , a vistula glacial plateau in the Brandenburg district of Potsdam-Mittelmark (Germany). The mountain is located in the Ferch district of the Schwielowsee municipality in the landscape protection area of Potsdam's forest and lake area between the Schwielowsee and the Lienewitz lakes . There used to be a 30 meter high fire watch tower on the summit. In 2012 it was replaced by a 55-meter-high antenna mast with a viewing platform attached at a later date .

Geology and forestry

The Wietkiekenberg is located in the northeastern terminal moraine of the Zauche, which was formed around 20,000 years ago during the Vistula Ice Age, when the inland ice on the Zauche reached its maximum extent to the south. Upstream of the terminal moraine, one of the largest sanders in Brandenburg, the Beelitzer Sander, formed. While its flat, wavy sand cone determines the Zauche in large parts, the northern and eastern parts have a stronger relief , as moraine peaks are interlocked with the sand here. The predominantly dry soils consist of bed load , marl boulder and sand .

The Wietkiekenberg in the Potsdam forest and lake area

Like almost all of the Zauche, the Wietkiekenberg is also characterized by monotonous pine forests in the form of poorly structured age-class forests .

In particular, the management in the GDR years led to monotonous pine monocultures . A 2005 formed Forstbetriebsgemeinschaft wants to rebuild the forest and species-rich mixed forests of oak , linden , Book , maples and other species of the potentially natural forest community convict. “On paths that lead up to the Wietkiekenberg, veritable avenues of deciduous trees are to be created over a length of 4 kilometers. Chestnut, maple and wooden pear should be used, of course a " bite protection " against hungry fallow deer is required . " Benjamin hedges are planned along some paths , which are to be planted with blackthorn , elderberries and blackberries . The first visible successes of the forest restoration, which is carried out for tourism reasons in addition to ecological ones, are expected after five to ten years. It is estimated that it will take at least sixty years to restore the mixed forest.

Summit tower

Old fire watchtower

Old no longer existing fire watchtower

The fire watchtower on the mountain top, dating from the GDR era, was 30 meters high and was not open to the public. Until 2007, foresters observed the forest from a small chamber at the top of the steel structure. Since the tower swayed up to three quarters of a meter in each direction in strong winds, the work was not an option for every forest worker. In 2007, a camera with an automatic forest fire early warning system took over the surveillance. If there were clouds of smoke within a radius of at least ten kilometers, the camera immediately triggered an alarm and sent the photos to the Forestry Office in Belzig , where the necessary measures up to fire fighting were initiated.

Light old pine wood on the Wietkiekenberg

Since the often dry pine forests on the barren breeding grounds are particularly vulnerable to forest fires , the tower was very important for forest protection. Despite his warnings, the forest could not always be preserved. In 1976, a fire that  broke out on the 26th day of forest fire warning level IV in a row destroyed 365 hectares of the forest:

“On May 10, 1976, there was a disaster forest fire in the Seddin area. The fire was reported at 10:50 a.m. by the Wietkiekenberg (Ferch) fire watch tower and was brought under control at 5:00 p.m. The starting point was the embankment on the line of the Reichsbahn Seddin – Belzig, near the Adlerbrücke near Neuseddin . A stopping locomotive emitted an extremely large amount of smoke - with flying sparks - which led to a fire. The fire ignited both in the dry litter and in the crown area of the 45- to 51-year-old pine. 365.33 hectares of forest were destroyed by the fire. The greatest length of the fire area was 4750 m, the greatest width 1500 m. "

New tower

Planning observation tower

Contrary to its name, the Wietkiekenberg does not offer a wide view as the summit is lined with trees. In order to enable a view of the Schwielowsee or over the Zauche, the discussion about building a new combined observation forest watchtower had been under discussion since the turn of the millennium.

The artist Thomas Gerdesmann, who initiated the “Belvedere Wietkiekenberg” tower competition in 1999, designed a sketch for a “Europe tower” on the Wietkiekenberg in 2001 as part of his “Prussian axis” project. According to Gerdesmann's ideas, the Prussian axis should ideally capture the geographic area of Europe in the basic theme of the Euro-cultural landscape and form a "basic element for a new type of communication and spatial planning instrument in the sense of European unity" . In 2009, the Brandenburg Ministry of the Interior presented plans for a 55 meter high concrete mast, at the top of which the surveillance cameras are to be installed. The tower is rejected by local politicians as a disaster for the landscape. Instead, local politicians and tourism experts advocate integrating the mast into the open Hummel Tower with a viewing platform, the design of which the Hummel architecture firm won the tower competition of the Schwielowsee Culture Forum in 2000 .

The state of Brandenburg as a builder ultimately chose the concrete pole, which also for the new digital radio network of emergency service (BOSNet) is provided. The Wietkiekenberg is to become one of twelve radio locations in the Potsdam-Mittelmark district.

completion

The new 55-meter-high spun concrete mast was erected in 2012 on an oversized concrete slab to enable the expansion to a lookout tower , which was initially planned and started in 2014 . An angled steel staircase with 113, according to other information 118 steps leads to the 22 meter high roofed viewing platform. On Friday, April 10, 2015, after six years of preparation, the observation tower on the Wietkiekenberg was officially opened. Together with the deputy district administrator Mr. Stein, the mayor Mr. Büchner, Dr. Ofcsarik and on behalf of Mr. Grunow as well as the companies involved, Mayor Kerstin Hoppe was able to approve the ascent to the viewing platform, which is about 150 meters above sea level. The old fire watch tower has since been torn down after the new mast was erected.

With good visibility you can look north over Werder, in the north-east you can see Potsdam, the telecommunications tower on the Schäferberg, further east the Berlin television tower on the Alex, in the west Beelitz-Heilstätten and in the west the area around Lehnin monastery .

House of the painter Hans Wacker

In 1928, the painter Hans Wacker bought a house near the Wietkiekenberg at Fercher Ringstrasse 3 . Wacker was close friends with Karl Hagemeister and belongs to the so-called Havelländische painter colony . Wacker, who up until then had a rather modest income, financed the house very likely with around thirty Van Gogh forgeries that his son and art gallery owner Otto sold. The most spectacular art forgery affair of the 20th century ended in 1932 when Otto Wacker was sentenced to 19 months in prison and a fine of 30,000 marks. Hans Wacker, who was not charged and whose authorship of the forgeries could never be clearly proven, lived in the house on Wietkiekenberg until his death in 1958. Subsequently, his daughter, the painter Else Wacker, who died in Ferch in 1980, lived in the Building.
