Live and act

Born a few years after the proclamation of the German Empire , Wilhelm Sporleder learned the trade of innkeeper after the elevation of his birthplace Linden, formerly the “largest village in Prussia ”, to an independent town.

As a member of the SPD, Sporleder was elected for the first time in Linden in the municipal elections of 1911 - the Prussian three -class suffrage was still in effect - a member of the Social Democrats in the 29-member council of citizens . Sporleder was thus in direct contact with the then “Lord Mayor” of the city of Linden, Hermann Lodemann .

After the First World War , at the beginning of the Weimar Republic , Wilhelm Sporleder was elected - on August 29, 1919 - initially as a - honorary - Senator of the city of Linden. From the following year, the year Linden was incorporated into the city of Hanover, Lodemann also represented the interests of his constituency in the Hanover provincial parliament (until 1933).

On May 4, 1924, the Hanoverians elected Sporleder again as mayor (BV). However, after he had been elected honorary senator that same year, Wilhelm Sporleder resigned from his BV mandate on October 7, 1924.

Around five years later, Sporleder was re-elected on December 20, 1929. When William Sporleder on March 12, 1933, after the seizure of power by the Nazis , was again elected chairman citizens, however, he abandoned this time on his duties as a senator, to use directly for his political mandate. But that same year, the Nazis forced him to resign.

The Nazis were also responsible for the death of Wilhelm Sporleder on January 24, 1945, a few months before the end of the Second World War . Sporleder died as a result of his imprisonment in the Neuengamme concentration camp . He is thus the only parliamentarian from the time of the Weimar Republic who died from the area of today's Hanover region and became a victim of National Socialism .
