Georg Friedrich Wilhelm von Braunschweig (born November 28, 1775 in Alt Klücken , Arnswalder Kreis , † September 17, 1854 in Neisse ) was a Prussian major general and commander of the 12th Landwehr Brigade.

Life

origin

Wilhelm von Braunschweig came from a Kolberger council family who had received the letter of nobility from the Polish King Sigismund in 1570 . His parents were Friedrich Wilhelm von Braunschweig (* October 17, 1742 - April 11, 1807) and his wife Charlotte Luise Henriette, born von Wedel (* January 4, 1750 - February 22, 1826) from the Blankensee family. The father was a Prussian colonel in the "von Owstin" infantry regiment and a gentleman on Alt-Klücken and Jagow.

career

Braunschweig joined his father's infantry regiment on April 1, 1790 as a private corporal and was promoted to second lieutenant by mid-July 1795 . In the Fourth Coalition War he fought in the Battle of Auerstedt , took part in the retreat to Lübeck and was made inactive after Ratkau's surrender. After the Peace of Tilsit , Braunschweig received his departure as captain on September 13, 1808 .

At the beginning of the Wars of Liberation , he joined the 1st Neumärk Landwehr Infantry Regiment on July 18, 1813 as a major and battalion commander. Braunschweig fought in the battles near Großbeeren , Dennewitz , Leipzig and Belle Alliance and took part in the assault on Arnhem . He was also at the sieges of Wittenberg, Gorkum, Antwerp and Landrecies. Braunschweig was wounded near Großbeeren and awarded the Iron Cross II. Class, for Arnheim he was awarded the Cross I. Class. On April 2, 1815, he came as a commander in the 2nd Neumärk Landwehr Infantry Regiment and was promoted to lieutenant colonel on October 21, 1815 . On November 15, 1816, he was appointed commander of the 4th Infantry Regiment . With a patent from April 1, 1822, Braunschweig was promoted to colonel on March 30, 1822. On November 9, 1823 he received the Commander's Cross of the Order of the Zähringer Löwen and on September 2, 1826 the Order of the Red Eagle III. Class. On December 9, 1830 he was commander of the 12th Landwehr Brigade and on March 30, 1833 promoted to major general. On September 30, 1835, Braunschweig received the Russian Order of St. Stanislaus, First Class, before he left with the statutory pension on March 12, 1836. He died on September 17, 1854 in Neisse.

In his assessment in 1819, General von Funck wrote : “Is endowed by nature with many faculties, has a lively mind, which has been properly trained, a precise knowledge of the service and a correct tact in his behavior, leads the regiment under him with caution, has a very useful effect on the training of officers and common people, shows sharpness and dexterity in maneuvers and is morally respectable.
