Wilhelm Heinrich Ernst von Cölln (born March 22, 1788 in Wolfshagen (Mecklenburg) , † March 4, 1866 in Berlin ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

His parents were the major of the Hessian gendarmerie Johann Heinrich Friedrich von Cölln and his wife Juliane Amalie Wilhelmine, née Treusch von Buttlar from the house of Markershausen .

Military career

Cölln came to Kassel as a page in 1796 . In 1801 he joined the Hessian Guard as Portepeefähnrich and advanced to Second Lieutenant until 1804 . After the Fourth Coalition War , Kurhessen was dissolved and the area was added to the newly established Kingdom of Westphalia .

So Cölln switched to Westphalian services, became a sub-lieutenant in 1808 and prime lieutenant in 1809 . He took part with his regiment in Napoleon's Spanish campaign and fought in the siege and the assault on Gerona as well as the battles at Casta-Rosa, Mantagu, Bannola, Medina, Bascara, St.Vincent, Cornelia, Tagula, Basalu, Figuerras, Martoria and St. Paulo. For Montagu he received the Knight's Cross of the Order of the Westphalian Crown . During that time he was promoted to adjoint major in 1810 and captain in 1811 . After returning to Westphalia, he marched with the Grande Army to Russia in 1812 and fought at Kloboloi, Danielowitsch, Wileika, Osmiana, Rudckony and Wilna. For Vilejka he received the Legion of Honor Cross . In 1813 he was still battalion chief, but after the defeat at Leipzig in August 1813, the Kingdom of Westphalia dissolved.

After the end of the Wars of Liberation , Cölln switched to Prussian service and on April 2, 1815, joined the 1st Neumark Landwehr Infantry Regiment as a captain. On February 27, 1816 he was aggregated to the 29th Infantry Regiment , on October 23, 1816 the 19th Infantry Regiment and on May 1, 1817 the 27th Infantry Regiment .

Cölln was appointed company commander on September 14, 1829, promoted to major on March 30, 1829 and at the same time transferred to the 27th Infantry Regiment as commander of the 2nd Battalion. From March 30, 1830 to March 29, 1840 he was commander of the 2nd battalion in the 31st Landwehr Infantry Regiment. As a lieutenant colonel , he was then assigned to lead the 34th Infantry Regiment . There he was appointed regimental commander on September 10, 1840 and promoted to colonel on April 7, 1842 . On March 27, 1847 he was then commander of the 15th Infantry Brigade in Cologne , in this position promoted to major general in May 1848, before he was given command of the 7th Landwehr Brigade in Magdeburg on June 7, 1848. He took part in the Baden campaign in 1849 and became commander of the 7th Infantry Brigade on September 15, 1849 . In this position, Cölln received the Order of the Red Eagle II. Class II. Class with oak leaves and swords on September 20, 1849 . In memory of the campaign, he received a silver medal with the portrait of the Prince of Prussia on March 18, 1851. On April 3, 1852 he received his retirement as lieutenant general with a pension. He died on March 4, 1866 in Berlin and was buried in the garrison cemetery in Hasenheide.

Cölln married Johanna Emilie Aurora von Kotze (1798–1882) on November 23, 1824 in Magdeburg . The couple had four children, including the future Prussian captain and Dr. phil. Ernst von Cölln (1830–1886).
