origin

The Müffling called Weiß were a German noble family, which was raised to the baron status. Wilhelm was the younger of the two sons of Eduard von Müffling (1801-1887), Prussian Privy Councilor in Erfurt .

Career

Wilhelm von Müffling called Weiß studied law in Bonn and became a member of the Corps Hansea Bonn there in 1860 . After completing his studies, he began as an auscultator at the district court in 1862, then at the Koenigs Wusterhausen cooperative commission and finally at the Mittenwalde collegiate department. In 1864 he became a government trainee for the administrative district of Erfurt and representative of the district administrator in the district of Mühlhausen i. Th. In 1869 he worked as a government assessor at the Hildesheim district office. During the Franco-Prussian War he was a member of the occupation authorities in France in 1870/71 . In 1872/73 he became district administrator of the district of Czarnikau , and in 1877 of the district of Demmin .

In 1887 he took over the office of police chief of Stettin . From 1889 he was police chief of Frankfurt am Main and at the same time administered the district office of Frankfurt / Land . In the 1890s, the population of Frankfurt grew strongly, especially through immigration from outside, which was accompanied by a considerable expansion of the city area. Wilhelm von Müffling endeavored to adapt the strength of the police to this development and was able to increase the number of police officers from 274 to 455 around 1900. Even so, the daily duty time of a police officer was around twelve hours. Wilhelm von Müffling retired on January 30, 1904 for health reasons.

He spent the last years of his life mainly in his retirement home near Grebenhain in Vogelsberg , the forest villa that he had built in 1904. This building still exists today and was owned by the von Müffling family until 1935 before it was sold to the Reich Aviation Ministry to serve as the administration building of the Hartmannshain air ammunition facility .

Wilhelm von Müffling was a legal knight of the Order of St. John and had three sons, of whom Karl (* 1872) was a naval officer, Georg (* 1875) District Administrator of the Oberbarnim district and Hans (* 1878) was Legation Councilor.
