Friedrich Wilhelm Anton von Schmid (born March 15, 1806 in Wesel , † March 30, 1882 in Wiesbaden ) was a Prussian major general .

Life

origin

Wilhelm was a son of the Prussian second lieutenant Andreas Schmid (1763-1806) and his wife Therese, née von Hayn (1773-1815). His father was a steward in the depot battalion of the infantry regiment "Elector of Hesse" in Hameln .

Military career

After Schmid had lost his parents at an early age, he came to the Berlin Cadet House and on April 15, 1823 was transferred to the 32nd Infantry Regiment of the Prussian Army as porter ensign. There he was promoted to captain and company commander by mid-September 1846 . During the First Schleswig-Holstein War , Schmid changed to Schleswig-Holstein services on November 20, 1848 . As a major and leader of a hunter corps, Schmid took part in the battles of Auenbüll, Kolding, Gutsö and Frederika. At Frederika he was wounded and awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, IV class with swords.

On April 25, 1850, he returned to Prussian service, was assigned to the 32nd Infantry Regiment as captain and was transferred to the 11th Infantry Regiment as a company commander on June 8, 1850 . On March 6, 1752 he became major and commander of the 1st Battalion in the 18th Landwehr Regiment in Posen. On December 4, 1856 he was battalion commander of the 10th Infantry Regiment and promoted to lieutenant colonel in early April 1857 . On May 19, 1859, Schmid was entrusted with the command of the 18th Infantry Regiment under position à la suite . With the promotion to colonel , he was appointed regimental commander on May 31, 1859. On April 7, 1863, he was appointed commander of the 25th Infantry Brigade and on September 22, 1863 he was promoted to major general. When the war against Denmark broke out in 1864 , Schmid took part in the assault on the Düppeler Schanzen as well as in the transition to Alsen . For this he was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with oak leaves and swords on the ring, and the Commander's Cross of the Order of Leopold with war decorations. On January 10, 1865, he was put up for disposal with a pension . He died on March 30, 1882 in Wiesbaden.

His diary was published by his son in the supplement to the 1914 military weekly, issue 2 and 3.

Schmid married Marie Luise Georgine von Hayn (1829-1919) on November 7, 1850 in Jülich . The couple had the following children:

On May 9, 1794, the Prussian nobility was confirmed for the descendants of Second Lieutenant Andreas Schmid.
