The Wilhelms-Gymnasium (named after King Wilhelm II. ) Is a state high school in the Stuttgart district of Degerloch with entry into the 5th grade and the Abitur after 8 years (12th grade). The high school is located in a building from 1963 in the south of Stuttgart.

history

The tradition of the school goes back to 1796. Duke Friedrich Eugen founded a "Real and Citizens School" as a counterpart to the humanistic grammar school . The school was very popular with children from enlightened citizens. Due to the increasing number of pupils, a separation into the "Friedrich-Eugens-Realschule" and the "Wilhelms-Realschule" was carried out 100 years later, with the forerunner of today's grammar school moving to Hohenheimer Strasse in Stuttgart-Mitte. The proportion of teaching hours in natural science subjects and in mathematics has been increased significantly at the "Wilhelms-Realschule". From 1900 the school was called "Wilhelms-Oberrealschule", and in 1903 access for pupils was limited. In 1937 the school was renamed "Wilhelms-Oberschule for boys". After the Second World War, the school suffered from inadequate spatial conditions - especially from 1948 and due to the influx of students from the suburbs.

In the 1960s, a group of architects headed by Prof. Volkart designed a spacious new building. This consisted of three buildings, which were arranged in a star shape, namely two buildings with classrooms and a gymnasium and swimming pool. In 1963, students and teachers at the “Wilhelms-Gymnasium” moved into the new building on Albstraße. The number of students rose from 600 to around 650 students.

In 1969 a linguistic train was set up with the order English-Latin-French, which was common at many high schools for boys in the Federal Republic of Germany.

Development since 1973

From 1973 girls were allowed to attend school for the first time. From the 1998/99 school year, schoolchildren were enrolled in an eight-year course that ends in grade 12 with the Abitur. Access to the previous nine-year course with the Abitur in the 13th grade was last possible in the 2003 school year.

The linguistic branch was strengthened in 2002 with Spanish as a third foreign language in the compulsory area. The school's focus is on new languages and natural sciences. English is taught as the first foreign language from the 5th grade (entrance level of the grammar school), from the 2nd semester of the 5th grade, Latin or French are available as the second foreign language. The information technology basic education (ITG) begins in grade 5. A social internship takes place in grade 10 as a supplement to professional orientation.

In the natural sciences branch, a natural sciences internship (NwT) in grades 8 to 10 and increased teaching in the subjects of biology, chemistry and physics are on the agenda. In the linguistic branch, Spanish is taught as a third foreign language.

In 2007, the school came in second place in the Central Wuerttemberg Regional Cup in the state-wide business game competition at grammar schools in Baden-Württemberg on the subject of "Primers manage an AG". The grammar school was national winner of the German Olympiad 2008/09.

From the 2013/2014 school year, the Wilhelms-Gymnasium will be one of the schools that offer G8 as well as G9.

After the construction of a new school canteen had been postponed several times, the opening is now scheduled for summer 2015.
