William Pierce Butler (born October 6, 1982 in California ) is an American multi-instrumentalist who was best known as a member of the indie rock band Arcade Fire . At the Academy Awards in 2014 , his film music for Her was nominated for the Oscar for best film music .

Life

Will Butler was born in California and raised in The Woodlands , Texas, the son of classical musician Liza Rey and geologist Edwin Farnham Butler II . His maternal grandfather was guitarist Alvino Rey . He graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy and then studied Poetics and Slavic Studies at Northwestern University .

He plays with his brother Win Butler in the Canadian indie rock band Arcade Fire, which was founded in 2002. He can be heard on all of the band's albums, where he played guitar, electric bass , clarinet , piano , synthesizer and percussion, among others .

In 2013 he wrote the score for the science fiction film drama Her by Spike Jonze together with Owen Pallett . The two received a nomination for this at the 2014 Academy Awards, but lost to Steven Price's music for Gravity .

On March 3rd, 2015 his solo album Policy was released on the Merge Records label , followed by an international tour with Arcade Fire's drummer Jeremy Gara .
