Will Schestak

Will Schestak (full name: Wilhelm Max Karl Schestak ; born July 18, 1918 in Mariaschein , Northern Bohemia - Austria-Hungary ; † April 1, 2012 in Burgstädt ) was a German portrait painter , draftsman and lithographer .

Life

Schestak attended the arts and crafts school in Reichenberg near Fraaß and von Friedenfels from 1932 to 1935 . He then began studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague with Heinrich Hönich , which he graduated in 1940. From 1940 to 1945 he was drafted into the war and in 1945, after expulsion from his homeland, Chemnitz became his adopted home. From 1945 he worked as a freelance artist in Chemnitz and met his wife Gertrud (* 1919). He became a member of the Association of Visual Artists of Germany (later the Association of Visual Artists of the GDR ) and started a family. From 1946 he took part in all district art exhibitions in the Karl-Marx-Stadt district. From 1947 to 1949 Schestak taught portrait drawing at the Volkshochschule Chemnitz. Together with Rudi Gruner , Willy Wittig and Gerhard Klampäckel , he designed the cultural new beginning in Chemnitz. From 1953 he took part in the third, fourth and fifth art exhibition of the GDR in Dresden and in 1973 at the international artist symposium in Piestany in Slovakia .
