William O. Shanahan

William Oswald Shanahan (born April 26, 1913 in Omaha , Nebraska , † November 29, 1990 in Mount Kisco , New York ) was an American historian specializing in 19th and 20th century German history.

Life

Shanahan studied at the University of California, Los Angeles (BA 1934 and MA 1935) and at Columbia University in New York, where he attended the nationalism seminars of Carlton JH Hayes and received a Ph.D. (Subject: Prussian Army Reform ) acquired.

He taught u. a. at Columbia University, the University of Notre Dame (as Associate Professor of History) in Notre Dame, Indiana, Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, and the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon. Most recently he was Professor of History at Hunter College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York .

He was also involved in the American Council of Learned Societies and was a member of the board of the American Committee for the Study of War Documents, recognized as a committee by the American Historical Association .

His works Prussian Military Reforms, 1786-1813 and German Protestants Face the Social Question were received extremely positively in the professional world, and his study on the liberal Reichstag deputy Friedrich Naumann received attention.

Shanahan, a Jesuit , was married with three children; he last lived in Katonah , New York.
