The Fleschenbach-Neustall wind farm is a wind farm in the area of the municipality of Freiensteinau and the town of Steinau an der Straße in Hesse . It lies on the boundary between the Freiensteinau district of Fleschenbach and the Steinau district of Neustall and at the time of its inauguration in August 2009 was the most powerful single wind farm in Hesse. From 2008 to 2011, several of its nine 150 m high wind turbines were also the tallest structures in the Vogelsberg district .

technology

The Fleschenbach-Neustall wind farm consists of nine Vestas V90-2MW wind turbines . These systems, specially designed for inland locations, have a hub height of 105 m, a rotor diameter of 90 m, and an output of 2 MW each . The total nominal output of the wind farm is 18 MW. The electricity generated is fed into the ÜWAG network via a cable route to the substation in Salmünster .

history

In 2001, the Central Hesse regional plan identified the ridge south of Fleschenbach, on the boundary with Neustall, as an area for the use of wind energy . The still young company Luftstrom Energiegesellschaft mbH from Mühlheim am Main began planning a wind farm at this location in the same year. This should initially include four wind turbines, two each in both districts. The project initially met with rejection from local politicians in the affected communities of Freiensteinau and Steinau an der Straße. After various avifaunal reports had been drawn up, the wind farm received the building permit from the responsible regional councils in Darmstadt and Gießen in February 2008 .

In the summer of 2008, the construction of the four turbines from the Danish manufacturer Vestas, each with an output of 2 MW, began. Even during the construction phase, the municipality of Freiensteinau changed its previously negative attitude towards the expansion of wind energy. Shortly after the re-election of the incumbent mayor, Friedel Kopp, the municipal council decided in September 2008 to designate further favorable locations for wind turbines. The reason for the "change of course" was the state policy requirements for the further expansion of the use of wind power by 2020, which in any case provided for the designation of further areas in the area of the municipality of Freiensteinau.

The planning of the Fleschenbach-Neustall wind farm was then extended by six more of the same type while the first four turbines were being set up, which should now be located exclusively in the Fleschenbach district. The four originally planned systems were fully installed by the end of 2008, but could not initially be put into operation due to a delay in network expansion. This then happened in March 2009. Once the approval for the expansion of the wind farm had been obtained, this was done relatively quickly. The expansion work began in June 2009, whereby for technical reasons one of the originally planned six plants was dispensed with.

On August 23, 2009, the Fleschenbach-Neustall wind farm with nine turbines was inaugurated. The wind farm is operated by a total of three companies. Two of the wind turbines are operated in the form of a community wind farm.

With a total height of 150 m in the upper rotor circuit, the seven systems built in the Fleschenbach district were the tallest structures in the Vogelsberg district at the time of their completion, replacing the 144 m high telecommunications tower Hoherodskopf . In 2011, three even higher Enercon E-82 E2 turbines with a total height of 179 m were commissioned at Rixfeld .

The Fleschenbach-Neustall wind farm retained its position as the most powerful wind farm of a single project developer and operator for almost three years. Since September 2012, however, this has been the Mücke-Feldatal-Ulrichstein wind farm near Ober-Ohmen , also located in the Vogelsberg district in the area of the Mücke municipality . It was designed and built by Renertec from Neuenschmidten (municipality of Brachttal ) and consists of 15 systems with a total nominal output of 30.9 MW.

The plan is to expand the wind farm with another system, which is to be built by 2014 on the border between Fleschenbach and its neighboring western town of Radmühl .
