Vladimir Vasilyevich Schelesnyakov
Vladimir Wassiljewitsch Schelesnjakow ( Russian Владимир Васильевич Железняков ; born January 28, 1931 in Nizhny Novgorod ) is a Russian astrophysicist and university professor .
Life
Schelesnjakow studied at the Faculty of Radiation Physics of the Gorky State University with a degree in 1954, which was followed by a three-year traineeship with Vitaly Lazarevich Ginsburg .
From 1957, Schelesnjakow worked at the Gorkier Research Institute for Radiation Physics (NIRFI), which was founded in 1956, as a research assistant and then as a department head. In 1959 he defended his candidate dissertation on a theory of sporadic radiation emission from the sun and planets . In 1964 he defended his doctoral dissertation on the radiation emission of the sun and planets, which was published as a monograph .
In 1977, Zheleznyakov moved to the Gorkier Institute for Applied Physics (IPF) of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (AN-SSSR, since 1991 Russian Academy of Sciences (RAN)), founded in 1976, and has since headed the Department of Astrophysics and Physics of Cosmic Plasma . He made important contributions to the understanding of the generation and propagation of electromagnetic waves in cosmic plasmas. The main focus of work was the theory of sporadic radio wave radiation from the sun, the light and X-ray radiation of pulsars and the investigation of the physical processes in the plasma of the magnetic white dwarfs and neutron stars . He also made contributions to high-performance electronics , the theory of spontaneous emission , the optics of liquid crystals and non-linear phenomena in the magnetic field in a vacuum .
Since 1966, Zheleznyakov has been a professor at the Gorky and Nizhny Novgorod State Universities. He lectured at the University of Maryland, College Park (1989), Nagoya University (1990), Utrecht University (1991), the Brazilian Instituto de Aeronaútica e Espaço (1995) and the Goddard Space Flight Center (1999) .
In 1987, Zheleznyakov became a corresponding member of the AN-SSSR and in 1997 a real member of the RAN. He has been a member of the International Astronomical Union since 1991 and works on the Commission for Radio Astronomy . He is a member of the Russian Program Committee for the Gamma-Ray Observatory of the European Space Agency (ESA) . Since 2009 he has been a member of the Presidium of the Nizhny Novgorod Science Center of the RAN. Its h-index is 29.
