Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory (ET short or W: ET) is a tactical shooter in first person view , which by the company Splash Damage led by id Software developed by Activision has been published. The computer game was originally supposed to appear as an extension to the title Return to Castle Wolfenstein (RtCW). It uses a modified version of the Id Tech 3 graphics engine .

Due to technical development problems in the single player mode , however, it was ultimately decided to offer Enemy Territory in a stripped-down version (only equipped with a multiplayer mode ), but as a stand-alone game that is independent of RtCW. It has been available for download free of charge from the Internet since May 29, 2003 . The game enjoys relatively high international popularity , not least because of its free availability for Windows , Linux and macOS and is part of various leagues, such as the Electronic Sports League and the ClanBase as well as the Quakecon .

overview

Generally two teams face each other in the game. Depending on the game mode, it is either the task of fulfilling certain mission objectives within a specified time or of preventing the opposing team from fulfilling these objectives. Each player on a team has five character classes to choose from, each with specific skills and weapon equipment. By coordinating the teammates, it is important to use or compensate for the advantages and disadvantages of the classes in the best possible way, in order to win the game as a team.

The scenario of Enemy Territory is - similar to that of the previous title - based strongly on the Second World War , troops of the Allies fight against those of the Axis powers . In addition, some scenarios (so-called maps ) reproduce historical theaters of war.
Not least because of the free availability of parts of the game's source code, it is constantly being developed.

Legal restrictions

Due to the numerous modifications, a correct age rating is only guaranteed for the original version, as it dispenses with symbols such as the swastika flag , whose public use in the Federal Republic of Germany is punished as an offense with a right-wing extremist background according to Section 86a of the Criminal Code , and other material harmful to minors.

Player classes

In order to differentiate the different character classes more strongly and thus to emphasize the tactical elements, certain weapons are available for each class. Each character has two one-handed weapons, a specific number of grenades and the respective weapon of choice or primary weapon as well as special utensils (such as dynamite for the Engineer or the explosive charge for the Covert Ops ). After killing an enemy, you can, if your character class allows this, pick up the opponent's weapon of choice. In addition to a knife for close combat and a Colt .45 ACP pistol (Allies), Luger 9mm (Axis Powers), you can choose from specialized machine guns.

Soldier ("soldier")

The soldier is a specialist in heavy weapons . He is the only one who can carry and use the mobile MG42 , the mortar , the flamethrower and the bazooka . In addition, he can carry different weapons of the same weapon group: Of the "light weapons" an SMG ( Thompson (submachine gun) or MP 40 ) and, depending on experience points, one or two pistols, as well as a heavy weapon.

Medic ("paramedic")

The paramedic can provide himself and wounded comrades with medical packages ( medipacks ) that donate new life energy. Furthermore, he is able to bring wounded players back into the game by injecting a syringe until they are unable to fight, without them having to wait until the next reinforcement wave (so-called respawn ).

An adrenaline injection is also available to him, which he can use from the fourth skill level of first aid. The original aim of this ability is to quickly heal incapacitated comrades in particularly competitive situations. This syringe, which the paramedic can only inject himself, temporarily ensures that the damage suffered is only half as great and the paramedic is given unlimited stamina. On some servers this function has been extended so that the paramedic from level 4 can also inject the adrenaline into his comrades or the adrenaline left behind by dead paramedics can also be collected and used by other soldiers. The paramedic is often used as a combat unit, because like other classes he is equipped with an SMG and takes less damage from the adrenaline injection and can sprint longer.

An expansion is also the ability to poison enemy players with the syringe that is used to heal teammates.

Field Ops ("Field Commander - Radio Operator")

The field ops is the specialist for field operations: He can mark the target for close air support by throwing a smoke grenade or the one for artillery support with binoculars and thus request the same immediately. The air support is a bombardment the length of an approximately 30 meter long zone, which runs perpendicular (perpendicular) to the Field Ops . Artillery support is a series of projectile hits in a 10 by 10 meter zone over a period of time. The field ops can also supply his teammates with supplies of ammunition.

Engineer ("pioneer")

The pioneer can attach and defuse dynamite loads, place and defuse mines, set up command posts and repair stationary machine-gun positions and vehicles. This makes it essential in most missions. The pioneer is also able to equip the M1 Garand (Allies) or K43 rifle (axes) with grenades (M7 or GPG40) and shoot them in the direction of the enemy. Since these grenades explode at shorter distances only after the second wall or floor contact and have slightly elastic impact properties, the pioneer can also cover hard-to-reach corners and hiding spots by using an angle; at further distances the rifle grenade explodes as soon as the first impact.

Covert Ops ("Spy, Saboteur and Sniper")

The Covert Ops is a specialist in covert operations as espionage, reconnaissance and sabotage. For example, he can steal and wear the uniform of fallen enemies, throw smoke grenades, uncover enemy mines for his comrades, use radar to provide information on the positions of enemy troops and destroy smaller targets with an explosive charge. Disguised, he can open doors for himself and his teammates that are otherwise only passable for the enemy, and thus infiltrate the enemy lines. The Covert Ops also has removable silencers for his pistol (when the Akimbo pistol is used, the silencers are permanently on the barrel), and he can use the sniper rifles.

The following weapons are available to him: an FG 42 , a Sten submachine gun with a silencer and a K43 or an M1 Garand , both of which, like the FG 42, are equipped with a target sight. The K43 and M1 Garand are silenced sniper rifles and both have a 10-round magazine. The shots must be fired individually. In return, the FG 42 is also equipped with a target device, but has two different fire modes. The former consists of individual shots fired while the aiming device is in use. When using the weapon without a target device, however, it is only possible to fire bursts automatically.

Maps

As maps are in Enemy Territory each scenario, so the game environments incl. The specified mission objectives, respectively. The currently available maps can be differentiated according to whether they are already supplied with the installation of the game (so-called standard maps) or were created by the community of players and have to be added separately (custom maps). The latter are either completely own creations, porting of well-known maps of the previous title Return To Castle Wolfenstein or adaptations of the six standard maps . From the large number of custom maps that are now available, some have also gained great importance in competitions ( clan war ), so that they can be viewed as an integral part of the game in the broader sense.

Standard maps

The Dora railway
gun actually existed during World War II.
The ruins of the Egyptian desert city in the Siwa oasis were the model for the map of the same name.
Seawall Battery
The powerful Siegfried coastal gun of the Axis powers threatens the Allied fleet in the Mediterranean. The Axis troops must protect Siegfried from sabotage attempts by the Allies.
Gold rush
The Axis powers guard a gold supply in the central bank of Tobruk . The Allies have to steal a tank destroyer from the Axis in order to blow up the bank, steal the gold bars and bring them to safety with a truck.
Würzburg radar
The Allies try to steal the components of the new Würzburg 62A radar of the Axis powers for a technical analysis. The Axis powers must guard the two prototypes of the radars and prevent the Allies from escaping with the stolen radar parts.
Railgun
The Allies must prevent the Axis powers from loading and firing the huge Dora railway gun. The Axis powers must load the ammunition for Dora and transport it by rail, protect her control unit and fire her to victory.
Fuel dump
The Allies want to destroy an Axis Powers' fuel depot and must escort their Churchill AVRE Demolition Assault Tank to break through the defense. The axes can paralyze the tank with bazookas, grenades, mines or explosives in order to delay its advance.
Siwa Oasis
The Allies must infiltrate the Axis garrison in the Siwa Oasis to destroy two fortress guns: either through the old city or through a flooded cave system. The axis must defend its two fortress guns and repel the Allied attackers.

The experience point system

A special feature of Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory is the XP system ( Experience Points , dt. Experience ), the hitherto rather in this type role playing was typical. Experience points are credited to the player for various actions such as killing opponents, long survival at the front or using the special skills of a character class in the course of the game.

Each player has two class-independent and one class-dependent categories of skills: the former include the use of light weapons and fighting spirit, while the latter - depending on the character class - focuses on skills in handling heavy weapons (Soldier), first aid (Medic) , engineering, signaling (field ops) or performing covert ops. The experience points gained are credited to one of these five categories, depending on which action belongs to.

After reaching a certain number of points within a category, the player moves up one level in this category and is rewarded with a special ability (for example, the recognition of enemy mines on the fourth level of combat skill). Each category has four levels. At the end of a round, the players with the most experience points in a category are awarded a medal. The increase in experience points is also linked to individual promotions of a player: Here, his rank, which ranges from private (allies) or shooter (axes) to general, is visible to everyone through a corresponding badge on his helmet, among other things.

Game modes

Objective Mode (single mission)
In a single mission, a selected card is played in isolation from the totality of cards. At the end of the round, all experience points and the associated rewards and ranks of the players are reset.
Campaign Mode (campaign)
In the campaign mode, several cards are played one after the other, whereby the players can keep and improve their experience points and all associated rewards throughout the campaign. The campaign is the most widespread mode on public servers, on which - usually - unknown players meet.
Stopwatch Mode (stopwatch)
In the stopwatch mode, two rounds of a card are generally played: In the first round, the attacking team tries to present their best possible time within the framework of the time limit; In the following round the sides are swapped and the second team tries to beat the given time in the role of the attacker. The game on time is the common mode on private servers in the context of so-called clan wars, in which the teams of two clans - often six against six (6on6) or three against three (3on3) - compete against each other. In most leagues such as the Electronic Sports League (ESL) or Clanbase (CB), the format for the Stopwatch Mode (stopwatch) was changed to five against five (5on5) in autumn 2009. This should ensure that the game remains clearer on the one hand, and Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory should also be more "competitive" with other popular first-person shooters.
Last Man Standing Mode (Last Survivor)
Last Survivor is a form of team deathmatch in which the players on both teams must eliminate each other in order to win a round. Each player has only one life - there is no wave of supplies. The team of the last survivor wins the round.
Last Man Standing Mode Hide and Seek
In this mode the Last Man Standing Mode is opened. One or more seekers must find and kill those who are hiding. To do this, all players must be Covert Ops.

Scripting

As in many other shooters, scripting has become widespread in Enemy Territory . Here you write in a so-called autoexec.cfg - File a series of commands. On the one hand, this saves you from having to set many options again via the menu on other PCs, and on the other hand, it allows you to write so-called scripts . For example, a key can be assigned a script that changes between two values of a variable . A typical example of such a variable is cg_fov . This allows you to define the field of view . The default setting is 90 (for a 90 ° field of view - a little more than the average person). The variable can also be assigned a higher value such as 110 using a script. In the game you can see on both sides at an angle of 110 °. This is particularly helpful in close combat. It is also possible to create scripts with which you can switch between the classes at the push of a button, a so-called spawn script .

Scripting also offers cheaters the opportunity to gain an advantage through prohibited scripts. A familiar script this category is the No-Recoil script (Kein- recoil script). This allows the player to fire sniper weapons without recoil.

There are many tutorials on scripting on the Internet, but in these you will find many variable names that do not exist or are used incorrectly and thus lead to errors.

Anti-cheat

The anti-cheat tool PunkBuster was supported until September 2011. There is currently no comparable replacement. In addition, the lines of code for integration in Enemy Territory have been deleted from the GPL publication, so that open source derivatives are incompatible. It is still possible to protect servers with PunkBuster . However, the lack of support makes getting started more difficult for new players. A manual installation of PunkBuster and the generation of an ETKey are then required. Both are possible via the community page ETKey.org.

Player statistics

  • Splatterladder : The SL's tracker queries all enemy territory game servers at intervals. If at least four players are playing on a game server, the tracker takes a closer look and starts tracking. The game server provides map, player name, score / XP and ping. Only the differences between two scan processes are ever evaluated. Attempts are made to keep these scan intervals as short as possible so that accurate statistics can be recorded. The current 30 seconds bring an accuracy of about 98% of the data collected. If the server is empty, the intervals between the intervals increase in order to save valuable resources. The respective status of the server can be seen in the server details. Empty servers are scanned at longer intervals, so it can happen that the tracker only registers after a few minutes that they are playing. But as soon as at least one player is on a server and the first scan takes place, the tracker switches back to the lowest scan interval. The tracker then creates map-based sessions that can be viewed by any player. If a session is longer than three minutes, the session data will be included in the player rating. For performance reasons, the sessions are deleted after 48 hours when they have been analyzed.
  • Trackbase : A second statistics page has been available since October 10, 2010. The tracker is similar to Splatterladder, but the statistics are recalculated more often and the rankings are updated every 10 minutes. Furthermore, a correct player rate is displayed (with Sl, the maximum player rate is limited to 22). The awards are updated once a day. The sessions are saved for seven days.

Mods

The development of Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory , which in the version had 2:55 still significant deficiencies, was mainly of parts of the community with: advanced mods as shrubet , ET Pro , NoQuarter and jaymod was attempted, the gameplay by eliminating some bugs additional and adding features to improve overall. Other mods, such as ET-Fortress (ETF) and True Combat: Elite (TC: E), on the other hand, created a completely new game, which is only based on the game logic underlying the enemy territory. Finally, there are also numerous modifications that change the appearance of the characters and objects (skins) or the sound within the game. There are now ET in version 2.60b, another update is not longer provided. The fact that on January 28, 2004 the source code of parts of the game was made available to the public by Activision was also beneficial for the emergence of many mods .

Bots

Since ET (in contrast to its predecessor RtCW) does not have a single player mode, it can usually only be played online or with several players in the LAN. Therefore, the development of bots (i.e. computer-controlled opponents) for ET was started early on. Bots are also used to replenish teams on game servers on the Internet when there aren't enough human players.

Bots for ET navigate with the help of so-called waypoints, which represent the geometry of the respective map through a directed graph . In addition, the behavior of the bots can be coordinated via scripts and adapted to the course of the game.

The following bots currently exist for ET:

  • FritzBot ET
  • Bobot
  • AI mod
  • Omni-bot

In FritzBot and Omni-bot, the bots can not only fight, but also achieve the mission objectives. Omni-bot is the only bot still developed and supports over 400 maps. Furthermore, the bots in Omni-bot can use vehicles and elevators, which in some maps (e.g. Railgun) is crucial for the success of the game.

There are also versions of FritzBot and Omni-bot for RtCW.

Open source

Enemy Territory: Legacy Logo

The source code of ET was released by John Carmack at Quakecon 2010 under the GNU GPL version 3. However, the game files are still covered by the more restrictive EULA . The ET: Legacy project has cleaned up the source code and replaced obsolete dependencies and fixed bugs, but remains binary compatible with the official version 2.60b and as many mods as possible. The Mod ET: XReal updates the engine to an OpenGL 3.2 renderer. It also enables the import of Doom 3 and Unreal Engine skeleton models including animations. The lighting supports real-time sunlight and high dynamic range rendering .

Events

  • The so-called Crossfire Challenge takes place once or twice a year - a LAN that was launched for Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory . But there are also competitions for other games, for example Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare or Quake Live .
  • In August 2010 Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory was also represented at the Antwerp eSports Festival.

successor

Wolfenstein has beenin developmentsince 2004 as the successor to Return to Castle Wolfenstein . Enemy Territory: Quake Wars is at least the spiritual successor to Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory and is set in the Quake universe. New elements are vehicles and the request for automatic defense guns, artillery guns and radar. In addition, both teams are now asymmetrical, and there are more equipment and class skills.
