Life

Schleich studied at the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich , where he graduated in 1981 ( quantum fluctuations in ring lasers ), received his doctorate from Marlan Scully in 1984 (optical tests of general relativity ), where he worked at the Institute of Modern Optics at the University of Was with Scully in New Mexico , Albuquerque , and completed his habilitation in 1989. From 1984 to 1986 he was a post-doc at the University of Texas at Austin with John Archibald Wheeler and then researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics in Garching with Herbert Walther . From 1991 he was a professor at the University of Ulm , where he is head of the quantum physics department. In 2008 he was also a Distinguished Professor at the University of North Texas at Denton.

Schleich deals with theoretical and experimental quantum optics, with applications to tests of general relativity (investigations into noise suppression in ring laser gyroscopes) and in quantum informatics as well as with the fundamentals of quantum mechanics. He investigated the interaction of light with atoms in atomic traps and demonstrated collective effects there and investigated the construction of quantum states with access via phase space (and the Wigner function ), about which he wrote a basic textbook.

From 1996 to 1998 he headed the quantum optics department of the German Physical Society . In 2008 he received the Willis E. Lamb Prize . He is the editor of Optics Communications. In 1995 he received the Leibniz Prize , the Max Planck Research Prize in 2002 , the Physics Prize of the German Physical Society in 1991 , the Otto Hahn Medal in 1993, the First Class Medal of the Technical University of Prague in 2007 and the Ernst Abbe Medal in 1993. He is a member of the Academia Europaea , the Austrian Academy of Sciences, the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences, the Leopoldina (since 2002) and the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences . He is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics , the Optical Society of America , the European Optical Society , the American Physical Society .
