geography

Map of the rural community

The rural municipality is located in Pomerania in the Żuławy Wiślane (Vistula-Nogat Delta) . Stegna is about 30 km east of Gdansk and about 10 km north of Nowy Dwór Gdański (Tiegenhof) , the seat of the powiat , on the state road 501 from Gdansk via Krynica Morska (Kahlberg) to Piaski (Neukrug) . The western limit of the Gmina is determined by the river Weichsel , the northern limit by the Baltic Sea . The narrow northern strip belongs to the Danzig Spit , the other municipal area consists of the Steegener Werder , the Scharpau and the old inland spit , which have grown together through land reclamation measures . 72 percent of the area is used for agriculture, 10% is forest.

history

Until the first division of Poland , the municipality belonged to the city of Danzig . In 1773 Steegen came to the Kingdom of Prussia and the Province of West Prussia . Due to the provisions of the Versailles Treaty , the area came to the Free City of Danzig after the First World War in 1920 .

Even before the attack on Poland , the later Stutthof concentration camp was established in the neighboring Stutthof . The last fighting took place on the territory of the municipality during World War II . Stutthof was only captured by the Red Army after the surrender , and West Prussia subsequently fell to Poland . The local population was displaced.

From 1975 to 1998 the rural community belonged to the Elblag Voivodeship .

Community partnerships

The municipality maintains a friendship pact ( Italian Patto di Amicizia ) with the municipality of Poppi (Italy).
