Yılmaz Onay 2000

Yılmaz Onay (born April 20, 1937 in Gaziantep , † January 9, 2018 in Bodrum ) was a Turkish writer, director and translator.

Yılmaz Onay has translated 27 plays, a short story, a novel, a volume of poetry and seven non-fiction books from the German language, which have been published by various publishers. In Turkey, the term epic theater and the writer Bertolt Brecht became known through him. Bertolt Brecht was his role model in the field of theater. He directed his first direction in Bertolt Brecht's play Furcht und Elend des Third Reich .

Yılmaz Onay was born in Gaziantep in 1937. In 1960 he completed his studies as a civil engineer at the Technical University in Istanbul (İTÜ). There he was also active on the stage of the ITÜ Theater. In 1961 he staged the play "The Rulers" by Eugène Ionesco as part of the "Duisburger Gesellschaft" ensemble, which consisted of young German, Turkish and Egyptian actors and an American soldier. He then worked for the Kino Theater and Ankara Experimentier-Bühne association until 1972 . He adapted and staged the play “War Game” from the radio play “So ein Stück” by Sermet Çagan for the stage. For this he received the 2nd prize at the International Peace Festival in Istanbul in 1965 . In 1966 he and a Brazilian group won the Grand Prix of the Festival Mondial du Theater du Nancy for the play "Lang Bach", which was adapted for the stage by Nihat Asyalı based on Yaşar Kemal's novel "Eisenerde, Kupferhimmel" . He played a reading piece under the direction of Max Meinecke at the “German Culture and Information Center” in Ankara . In 1972 he directed Bertolt Brecht's play "Fear and Misery of the Third Reich" in the Ankara Art Theater (AST) for the first time. From 1972 to 1973 he was invited by the ITI (Center for the Federal Republic of Germany of the International Theater Institute) as an intern at the municipal theaters of Essen and Berlin . In 1974 he helped found the Contemporary Stage in Ankara. From 1975 to 1978 he staged Nazım Hikmet's “Yusuf and Menofis”, Nihat Asyalı's “Strike” and a stage adaptation of Gladkov's “The Cement”. In 1981 he performed the play “Little Man, What Now?” At the Ankara Art Theater , based on the novel by Hans Fallada , and in 1984 his self-written cabaret “These price increases are against me”. From 1985 to 1989 he staged his own plays “Those Who Stayed in Purgatory” and “The Mystery of Karagöz” in Amsterdam and “The Artist's Death” in Paris . In Germany in 1988 his children's play about peace "Our songs must not die" was performed under the title "Six crazy people and a song" at the Theater Manufaktur on Halleschen Ufer in Berlin. In 1990 he completed a workshop with the Berlin Dialog Group. Then the drama “Violence” was staged in the Ballhaus. In 1991, Dario Fo also performed “Paid Not!” Under his direction.

From 1993 to 2004 he worked as a director at the Turkish State Theater, where he staged numerous plays, including his own, in Istanbul and various district theaters. His novel “Schriften FİLMATİK” has been filmed. During this time he staged Nazım Hikmet's “Tartufe 59” under the new title “Tartuffe 2000” in the Tiyatrom in Berlin. In 2002 he retired. He staged his own play “Artist's Death” on the Denkbühne and Bertolt Brecht's “The Small Bourgeois Wedding” in the Ankara Art Theater (AST). In 2005 his play “Prometheia” was performed in the Netherlands by a Turkish ensemble in Turkish and by a Dutch ensemble in Dutch as part of a special project. In 2006, his play "Artist's Death" was filmed as a television play by TRT .
