Yannick Mettler (born Amberg , born October 26, 1989 in Lucerne ) is a Swiss racing driver .

Career

Karting

Mettler began his motorsport career in karting in 2004 . Until 2006 he competed in national kart races. From 2007 to 2008 he won a race in the Swiss Kart Championship and in the DKM (category KF2) and took part in a European Championship for the first time. In 2008 Mettler also won a test day with a formula car as a prize for the Swiss Kart Challenge title.

Formula classes

With a start in the Lista Junior formula at the end of 2009, Mettler switched to formula racing . With two wins and a total of eight podium places in twelve races, he was the best newcomer with the Daltec Racing team and was runner-up in the Formula Lista Junior 2010. He also took part in four races in the Pacific Formula BMW, where he scored once. In 2011 Mettler started with the Bordoli Motorsport team in the German Formula 3 Cup , where he took part in seven out of nine races. In 2012 Mettler switched to Performance Racing within the German Formula 3 Cup . Together with the Swedish-English team, he achieved one win, three podiums and ten top-5 placements.

Transition formula to touring cars

In 2013 Mettler competed again for Performance Racing at individual races. In 2014 he first turned towards prototypes. He achieved a victory and a 2nd place for the Wolf Racing Academy in two guest starts in the AvD Sports Car Challenge on a CN prototype (Division 2) . At the same time, Mettler won a race in the Legend Supercup (silhouette vehicle series) of the Acceleration14 championship in 2014 .

Touring car

In 2016 Mettler made a double debut in touring car and endurance racing. In the BMW M235i Racing Cup, Mettler started for the FK-Performance team in the VLN endurance championship . With Thorsten Wolter as a team mate, he achieved 6th place overall in the M235i Racing Cup and a podium in the Cup5 class of the VLN. Mettler finished his first 24-hour race on the Nürburgring together with Thorsten Wolter, Alex Lambertz and Patrick Hinte in 4th place in the Cup5 class.

In 2017 Mettler won the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring with the FK Performance team in the BMW M235i Racing Cup class. In the VLN endurance championship he achieved two more podium places and four times the fastest race lap. In total, he started six times as a soloist during the 2017 season and ensured one of the tightest finishings in the history of the VLN. Another media highlight was the result of a maneuver in which he avoided a squirrel during a race. In the remaining three races he shared the cockpit with Stef van Campenhoudt and Patrick Hinte. In the end, Mettler finished the VLN season with four technical failures again in 6th place overall.

In 2018 he repeated his victory in the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring in the BMW Cup class, but this time with the Sorg Rennsport team and teammates Heiko Eichenberg, Tristan Viidas and Torsten Kratz. In addition, Mettler started with Sorg Rennsport for the first time in the 24 Hours of Dubai , which he finished with the fastest race lap in second place in the BMW M235i Cup class.

In 2019 Mettler started again at the 24 Hours in Dubai and won the TCR and the overall touring car rankings at its premiere in a VW Golf GTI TCR from the Swiss Autorama Motorsport team .

GT Sport

Parallel to the 24h successes, Mettler was promoted to the GT4 class within the VLN in 2018 . With nine top 2 results in nine races, he and his team-mate Heiko Eichenberg won the championship in a BMW M4 GT4 from Sorg Rennsport. In total, the duo has won five times and taken pole position three times. With further top 2 placements in guest starts, including the 24-hour qualification race (class V4) and the NES 500 run at the Nürburgring, Mettler finished all 13 races of this season on the podium.

In 2019 he was promoted to the GT3 Michelin Le Mans Cup on a Mercedes-AMG GT3 from the CBRX by SPS automotive performance team . Together with his team mate Dexter Müller, Mettler achieved a first podium (2nd place) at the season opener in Le Castellet . As part of the Michelin Le Mans Cup, Mettler also took part in the "ROAD TO LE MANS" framework race, which will be held on the Circuit des 24 Heures immediately before the Le Mans 24-hour race .

At the same time, Mettler contested other races on the Nürburgring Nordschleife with the Black Falcon team . Among other things, he won the 24 hours at the Nürburgring for the third time in a row (this time in the GT4 class) and for the first time also in the 24-hour qualification race (here in the open GT4 class SP8T). Furthermore, a second place jumped out in the third run of the VLN in the SP8T class.
