Ziauddin Sardar

Ziauddin Sardar (born October 31, 1951 in Dipalpur , Okara District , Punjab , Pakistan ) is a British writer, historian, television producer and cultural critic of Pakistani origin living in London . He is considered one of the UK's leading Islamic intellectuals, specializing in areas such as the future of Islam, science and cultural relations. In the debate about the " Islamization of knowledge " and the "Islamization of science" ( Islamization of science ), which was carried out primarily from the US International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT) near Washington, DC ) Sardar is often mentioned together with the American-Persian Islamic philosopher Seyyed Hossein Nasr (born 1933).

Live and act

Ziauddin Sardar came to England from Pakistan as a child and grew up in London. He studied physics and computer science at City University in London . In 1975 he developed a simulation model for the pilgrimage on behalf of the Hajj Research Center at King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah ( Saudi Arabia ) . He edited Hajj Studies together with Zaki Badawi . He later worked for a time at Middlesex University , United Kingdom. He also worked as a journalist (including for Nature and New Scientist ) and as a television reporter. He was the editor of Futures , published regularly in the New Statesman, and is the founder of Critical Muslim magazine . He was visiting professor for Postcolonial Studies at City University in London. In his book Rescuing All Our Futures , he criticizes the one-sided Western vision of world development and encourages the rest of the world to actively work for a future that takes non-Western values into account.

Sardar describes in his autobiographical novel Desperately Seeking Paradise: Journeys of a Skeptical Muslim (2005; “Desperate Search for Paradise: Journeys of a Skeptical Muslim ”) his search for the ideal of Islam. After meeting Osama bin Laden in Pakistan, Sardar began to increasingly question the ready- made solutions of fundamentalists who expected salvation from an Islamic state based on Sharia law .

The British magazine Prospect voted him one of the 100 best-known intellectuals in Great Britain , the British daily The Independent called him: 'Britain's own Muslim polymath'.

In view of the major construction projects in Mecca , in particular the Abraj Al Bait Towers and the Jabal Omer complex, Ziauddin Sardar warned that Mecca was degenerating into a kind of Disneyland and spoke of the destruction of Mecca .

Ziauddin Sardar has published more than forty books on various aspects of Islam. He wrote several of his books with the Welsh anthropologist Merryl Wyn Davies, who has converted to Islam .

He was one of the speakers at the 2017 IIIT European Summer School, organized by the London office of the US International Institute of Islamic Thought .

In his eyes Sardar does not have the ability to make correct interpretations of the Islamic tradition. He is, he says, a person who just add the word Islamic to various disciplines and think that this is enough. "
