Ziri Rideaux , née Wagner (born January 4, 1967 in Esslingen , Germany ) is a German journalist , director and photographer . She produced films such as hair curlers for Kabul (55 min, ARD ), Die Baumfrau (30 min, ZDF ) or backgammon (95 min, 35mm ). She is also the founder of the first alternative funeral home in the USA under the name "Friends".

Private life

Ziri Rideaux grew up in the Bavarian municipality of Wettstetten under the name Ziri Barbara Wagner as the oldest of two daughters of Transylvanian immigrants in Germany. After graduating from high school, which she passed at the Christoph-Scheiner-Gymnasium , she studied journalism and political science in Munich .

In addition to her preference for various competitive sports, Rideaux already showed a keen interest in spiritual things as a child . Through her family tradition, which is characterized by shamanism , she came into contact with shamanism at a young age. In his early twenties, Rideaux finally worked on a voluntary basis in various hospices , accompanying around 200 dying people on their way to death. When her own parents later developed cancer, she also assisted them with their dying process, which inspired her to develop her screenplay "Fire is my Friend" and prompted her to start her own funeral home.

Another formative experience for Rideaux was her long trip around the world, during which she came into contact with countries in the third world in particular .

Around the mid-1990s, Rideaux met her future husband, Patrick Rideaux, and they made their home with him in California

Career

After completing her studies, Rideaux moved to Berlin and moderated a magazine there with Cherno Jobatey until she finally embarked on her five-year trip around the world. There Rideaux filmed for ARD , ZDF , BBC and other stations in theaters of war such as Afghanistan , Rwanda , Somalia , Iraq and Bosnia .

After her trip, she gave up her job as a war correspondent and now established herself with her production company "Ziriusfilms" in Los Angeles with award-winning documentaries and feature films that deal primarily with political, social and ecological issues. She also worked in Los Angeles as a horse whisperer , flamenco guitarist and tattoo artist . In 2001 Rideaux founded her photo agency "Picture Perfect". At the same time she established herself as a painter , comic artist and poet . In 2012 Rideaux founded the first alternative funeral home "Friends" in the USA as a "death midwife" and undertaker, with the intention of making the death and the funeral arrangements as personal as possible.

successes

With her documentaries and feature films, Rideaux has already achieved some success. Her last documentary “Curlers for Kabul” was sold internationally in Cannes in 2004. Before that, she achieved international success with her film “Die Baumfrau”, for which she received the International Documentary Association award . In 2000, Rideaux's first feature film "Backgammon" also premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and received the Cannes Independent Award from Prince Albert of Monaco . The film was also awarded at the New York International Film Festival .

Furthermore, Rideaux's film "Accountant on the Warpath" was shown at the 2002 Sundance Festival . In addition to her work in feature and documentary film, Rideaux directs award-winning commercials and is a regular guest lecturer in film classes at UCLA and USC in Los Angeles .
