" Blood and Iron "is a linguistic image used in politics in Germany, especially since the Napoleonic Wars. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, this pair of words was associated with the idea of either the founding of a German nation-state brought about by military means or a power-state-military approach. The buzzword “blood and iron” gained notoriety through a speech that the Prussian Prime Minister Otto von Bismarck gave to the budget committee of the Prussian House of Representatives on September 30, 1862 during the Prussian constitutional conflict. As a result, both opponents and supporters of the Prime Minister saw the pair of words as a strategy of Bismarckian politics: the aim of "Blood and Iron" was to use foreign policy successes to distract from domestic tensions.
