Greatest Hits: My Prerogative is the first greatest hits collection from pop entertainer Britney Spears, released on November 9, 2004.

Album information

The set includes most of Spears' hit singles, from "...Baby One More Time" to "Outrageous", and just about everything in between. Included are three new songs; a cover of Bobby Brown's "My Prerogative" (which was featured as the lead single and has gone on to be an international #1), and two previously unreleased songs entitled "Do Somethin'" (which was later released as a single) and "I've Just Begun (Having My Fun)", the latter of which also appeared on the In the Zone DVD.

Rumors abounded that her record company were to release a greatest hits at the end of 2004 in early March, around the time of the massive success of "Toxic." The album was officially announced later on in the year, with the UK leg of her label taking it upon themselves to launch a promotional campaign entitled "I Love Britney"; the idea being to remind people just why they fell in love with Britney, with badges, T-shirts, bags and CDs being sent out to promote the album (such a collage appears in the liner notes, with the album cover included as well), and an exhibition at a London art gallery officially launching the album in the UK. It debuted at #2 in the UK chart, selling over 225,000 copies in its first week, with an approximate sales total of 750,000 in the UK and being certified double platinum.

In the USA, the album sold approximately 255,000 and debuted at its peak of #4. It has sold over 1.4 million copies (RIAA platinum certification) domestically, and ended up at #74 in the Billboard 2005 Year in Music from the Billboard 200 list (it was also at #98 for 2004). In Japan, it became her first #1 album, and by the end of 2006, had sold over 975,000 units.

On Feb 16, 2007 the compilation was re-printed in Italy with a Slim Cartonate Pack and it will include "Don't Let Me Be The Last To Know", similar to the UK edition, the only edition that includes the song.

Miscellanea/Trivia

  • In the music video for Daft Punk's song "The Prime Time of Your Life", at least 2 minutes into the video there is a scene where a girl looks at herself in her bathroom mirror. In that scene, for a split second, if you look into the mirror a poster for My Prerogative is visible reflected in the mirror, except Spears's face is blocked out by a skull head.
  • Bobby Brown, original performer of "My Prerogative", has worked with Spears before an assistant engineer on her previous smash hit album Oops!...I Did It Again. Spears wrote additional lyrics for the song, but is not credited normally.
  • Only the UK edition provides a complete compilation of all the singles released in that country. The Australian release omits "From The Bottom Of My Broken Heart" (it is replaced by the Europe-only single, "Born To Make You Happy"); the European release omits "Don't Let Me Be The Last To Know" (the French version also omitting "Anticipating," but including "I Love Rock 'N' Roll"), the American version omitting "From The Bottom Of My Broken Heart" and "Don't Let Me Be The Last To Know", and the Philippine edition omitting "From The Bottom Of My Broken Heart", "Don't Let Me Be The Last To Know", "Girl in the Mirror", and "Anticipating".
  • Several Spears singles were not included in any edition, be they regular or promo singles. They are, in chronological order: "From The Bottom Of My Broken Heart", "Girl in the Mirror", "Anticipating", and "Breathe On Me". Some fans have reacted unhappily to the exclusion of "My Broken Heart", given the fact that there was still space on the CD for approximately two more songs, and that the song was very successful.
  • The limited edition of the album is in a digipak. The digipak's cover is the same as the standard edition, but the colors look darker because of the shining effect. You can also find a collage of all of Britney's albums and singles covers in the limited edition.
  • It is Spears' first album to not debut at #1 on the Billboard Top 200, as it debuted and peaked at #4, but has managed to appear twice on Billboard's year-end charts. In 2004, it was at #98; in 2005 it was #74.
  • The Philippine version of the album's limited edition has the title "Overprotected [The DarkChild Remix] - Radio Edit". In fact, it is the original album version of "Overprotected" that was included in the CD. This was corrected in the regular edition, but the liner notes even for the limited edition were correct.
  • Except for "I've Just Begun (Having My Fun)", all nineteen songs (see the UK edition) were #1 hits in the Philippines. In fact, Britney's only non-#1 hit in the Philippines is "Someday (I Will Understand)", her 2005 single, which reached #4.
  • The screenshots of Britney in the liner notes are snapshots from her music videos. You can also find a "Poster Choice" in the inside front and back cover with different pictures of Spears throughout her career, representing the change she underwent between Oops!... I Did It Again and Britney.
  • The cover is remeniscent of Prince's 'Dirty Mind' cover shoot.
