(2718) Handley ( 1951 OM ; 1935 SL ; 1972 JT 1 ; 1974 WB 1 ; 1979 SF 1 ) is an approximately 25 km large asteroid of the main outer belt that was discovered on July 30, 1951 by the South African (then: Union of South Africa ) astronomer Ernest Leonard Johnson was discovered at the former Union Observatory in the Observatory district in Johannesburg ( Gauteng Province ) in South Africa ( IAU code 078). It belongs to the Themis family , a group of asteroids named after (24) Themis .
designation
(2718) Handley was named after the United Kingdom entertainer Tommy Handley (1894-1949) , who was known during World War II . He began his career in variety and concerts , but found in 1926 that his very fast style of spoken humor suited the new medium of radio . His greatest success was the radio program " It's That Man Again " (ITMA), which was first broadcast in 1939. The naming was suggested by the American astronomers Brian Marsden , Gareth V. Williams and Robert Williams .
