(2723) Gorshkov ( 1976 GM 2 ; 1970 GO 2 ; 1978 TS 2 ) is an approximately 13 kilometers large asteroid of the outer main belt , which was discovered on August 31, 1978 by the Russian (then: Soviet Union ) astronomer Nikolai Stepanowitsch Tschernych at the Crimean Observatory ( Nautschnyj branch) on the Crimean peninsula ( IAU code 095) was discovered. It belongs to the Themis family , a group of asteroids named after (24) Themis .
designation
(2723) Gorshkov was named after the geodesist and astronomer Pyotr Michailowitsch Gorschkow (1883-1975), who was a professor at the State University of St. Petersburg and researched in the fields of geodesy , gravimetry , celestial mechanics and the history of astronomy .
