(3073) Kursk is an asteroid of the main inner belt , which was discovered by the Soviet astronomer Nikolai Tschernych on September 24, 1979 at the Crimean Observatory in Nautschnyj ( IAU code 095). There had already been an unconfirmed sighting of the asteroid at the Crimean Observatory in Nautschnyj under the provisional designation 1979 SW 11 in November 1969.

The Italian astronomer Vincenzo Zappalà defined in a publication from 1995 (et al.) That (3073) Kursk belonged to the Flora family, a large group of asteroids named after (8) Flora . Asteroids of this family move in a 4: 9 orbital resonance with the planet Mars around the sun . The group is also called the Ariadne family after the asteroid (43) Ariadne .

On July 13, 1984 the orbit of the asteroid was secured and it was given the number 3073. It was named on July 2, 1985 after the western Russian city of Kursk .

During photometric observations of (3073) Kursk from December 11th to 27th, 2006 it was found that the asteroid at a distance of 6.6 km has a companion about a quarter of its size. Both bodies orbit a common center of gravity in 44.96 (± 0.02) hours. The moon takes 1,873 days to orbit around (3073) Kursk and was given the provisional designation S / 2007 (3073) 1 .
