(72071) Gábor is an asteroid of the main inner belt that was discovered on December 31, 2000 by the Hungarian amateur astronomer Krisztián Sárneczky and the Hungarian astronomer László Kiss at the Piszkéstető observatory ( IAU code 561) in the northern Hungarian Mátra Mountains on behalf of the Budapest Konkoly- Observatory was discovered. The asteroid had already been sighted on June 21 and 22, 1998 under the provisional designation 1998 HL 88 at the Lincoln Laboratory Experimental Test System in Socorro , New Mexico as part of the Lincoln Near Earth Asteroid Research (LINEAR) project.

Mean distance from the Sun ( major semi-axis ), eccentricity and inclination of the orbit plane of (72071) Gábor lie within the respective limit values ​​that are defined for the Nysa group, a group of asteroids named after (44) Nysa (also called Hertha family, after (135) Hertha ).

According to the SMASS classification ( Small Main-Belt Asteroid Spectroscopic Survey ), a spectroscopic study by Gianluca Masi , Sergio Foglia and Richard P. Binzel (72071) assigned Gábor to the taxonomic class of the C asteroids .

The asteroid was named on July 30, 2007 after the Hungarian engineer Dennis Gábor (1900–1979), who received the 1971 Nobel Prize in Physics “for his invention and development of the holographic method ”.
